If you want internet from someone else then just do it.
They run the wire in through the window or the existing phone line (if there is one). Don't even ask the landlord or your school. Just do it.

Maintenance fees... they are what they are unless you can speak Korean well enough (or have a friend who can speak Korean and is willing to help) to negotiate it lower.
Getting the fee dropped because of "discrimination"... that was just funny.
You're not in America now.

Hot water.. buy an electric, wall mounted one that goes between the tap and you. They are about 150k won. Take it with you or sell it when you leave. They look like this:

All the hot water you want (I hope you get your electric bill from the KEPCO and not through the landlord.

Have you tried not turning the water on full blast? My new-ish officetel is nice, but the water boiler capacity is terrible. If I turn the knob all the way up, the hot water only lasts 5 minutes. If I turn it halfway it stays hot but the pressure is weak.

Maintenance fees don't necessarily mean you'll have a security guard. Usually the maint. fees include the water and general upkeep of the building.

I'll give it a try with the shower thing.

I don't have a big problem with the concept of maintenance fees. The problem is the amount which seemingly pays for nothing. The building is only 2 floors of 10 apartments per floor. I pay my own water, electric, internet, and I don't have TV. I'm not sure what the maintenance fee could realistically be used for aside from nice dinners for the landlord. Maybe replacing a light bulb in the hall?

As I mentioned above - only foreigners in the building pay the maintenance fee. The Korean tenants do not pay a maintenance fee. How do I know? I've seen bills from the other teachers and from other Korean tenants. The foreigners have a maintenance fee while the Korean tenants do not.

The answer is probably no for all of those. If you're able to teach the landlord or anyone else what discrimination is and why they should care about it, I’ll be impressed. Nice workarounds offered above, though.

Pretty often, the maintenance fee isn't formally billed. It is just either handed over in cash, or transferred to the owner's bank account on-line. That may explain why you don't see it on the bills of Korean tenants. And if the tenants don't pay, every few months, the owner will literally come knocking and be a derriere about it.

So sick of these people complaining about this stuff. If you don't like taking a 2 minute shower like the rest of us, go to a sauna, it's only ten bucks or so.
