Trains are halted between Euljiro 1-ga station and Seongsu station on Line 2, operator Seoul Metro said in a statement on its website. It’s the busiest subway line in the city of 10.4 million, carrying more than 2 million people a day, according to the Seoul government.

I wonder why.

"Many of the injuries were caused by passengers jumping from the subway cars onto the tracks, a government emergency official said."

Thats the hard thing. Sometimes it pays to listen, sometimes you just dont know. Maybe better a broken ankle than unthinkable alternatives. Or maybe cause yourself an unnecessary serious injury.

They were also told to stay where they were during the Daegu Subway Fire back in 2003.

Because Koreans can't swim but can run. Seriously, Koreans drown on wet grass. Laughing

It's tough to jump in high heels.

Carrying a jumbo bag or two.

While you're texting on your smartphone.

I wouldn't want to try it.

I think Broadway chorus girls can do that, and probably more, and not only that and get paid less! Laughing

They're not sure if the subway malfunctioned or if it was driver error.

I wonder if some were aware of the 2003 Daegu Subway Fire that killed 198. During the fire the doors opened briefly then shut again.

The shutting of the doors by the harebrained engineer is why so many died in that fiasco. Yet another example of Korean ineptness and cluelessness.

Over 200 people were injured as two trains collided in the subway of South Korea's capital. About 150 were reportedly hospitalized with mostly minor injuries, while around 1,000 commuters were safely evacuated.

The accident occurred on Line 2 of the subway in east Seoul at around 15:35 local time (06:35 GMT). One train ran into the back of another, which had stopped between stations due to a mechanical problem.

According to a preliminary investigation, the train's automatic distance control system may have malfunctioned, the Associated Press reported, citing officials.

The driver of the moving train said he applied the emergency brake after noticing a stop signal but wasn't able to halt in time, Seoul Metro official Jeong Su-young said.

“A proceed signal changed to a stop signal, so we used the emergency gear, but we could not attain the 200 meter emergency distance. This is why the train crashed. This is how we understand it. The exact cause will be announced after investigating further.”

Quote:
“I fell forwards maybe two or three meters,” 26-year-old Lee Dong-hyeon, an office worker on the moving train, told Reuters. “It was like tripping over when running really fast.”

Korean media reported that there were long delays in giving instructions to passengers about what to do following the incident.

The collision's impact derailed one subway car. Passengers had to walk through the tunnel to get back to the station, YTN television reported.

Many injuries were caused by passengers jumping from the subway cars onto the tracks, according to a government emergency official. An onboard announcement initially told commuters to stay inside, though most passengers ignored it and forced the doors open to escape, witnesses told Reuters.

There was a derailment on the NYC subway. Here's how they handled it:
Quote:
The rescue lasted about two hours, as emergency personnel ducked into the dim subway tunnel to shepherd passengers out of the cars, onto the tracks and along a steep climb through an emergency exit leading to the street."

Quote:
Once it seemed clear that the worst was over, riders said, there were jokes about walking through the sludge of the subway tracks and suggestions that, hopefully, a boss might let them off work for the day.

“I have a whole bunch of new friends,” Mr. Greene said. “We’re going to go hang out.”

The authorities praised passengers’ composure during the rescue.

“They’re New Yorkers,” Deputy Assistant Chief James Leonard of the Fire Department said.
