Fair enough. Though I suppose I could up the ante a little. Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers fame gets caught on tape delivering a pro-NAMBLA rant. There were never any kids on his show, so no threat of actual harm. Okay for him to keep his TV job?

Not an issue for me. Entertainers themselves are a grey area though, because their image and personality is a direct qualification for their work. I suspect his show would naturally fail after that even independent of any conscious attempt to punish him, simply because the very child-friendly image upon which his performance relied would be tarnished. By contrast, NBA fans have evidently been successfully ignoring indications of racism in Mr. Sterling for years, it's only an illegally-recorded private conversation shoved in their faces with social media that set this off. That shows how little the character of a team owner really matters to them.

But I still think it understandable if private organizations wish to disassociate themselves from members or associates who make particularly inflammatory comments.

Well, in the current witch-hunt environment it's understandable enough, yes.

The girl's actilons is a red herring. That's a separate issue. No problem with the shyt Sterling is getting. He's an owner in a league that has 80% Black players, that is trying to make it a global sport in areas that are not white. Its a marketing disaster to keep him. Spors leagues aren't IBM or Kodak. To get in the hall of fame baseball has a morality clause. The argument seems to be here, its okay to be racist IF you keep it private. lol. Racist in a sport that is 80% black. Okay, right. If it was YOUR group, you'd hear about it, if you were Jewish and it was anti-semetic or Gay and it was homophobic or a woman and it was extremely sexist. The hypocracy as well is the league knew he was racist but as long as he didn't prove it, it was okay. His views and attitudes were common knowledge. This isn't a court of law where its fruit from the poison tree. Some of you are reaching. What you're mad about is HOW he got found out he's a racist, not IF he is one. Furthermore, his apartments were mainly in and around Beverly Hills. If you can afford to rent there, you're not some poor guy trying to make ends meet. The background check, etc. qualifies you and says you're well capable of renting there and also says you're of the same socio-economic class of the residents but Sterling would rent it to minorities and families anyway. Again, his racism was well known.

Its the same as if he ran a predominantly Jewish organization and it was found he was a Nazi sympathizer or mostly women organization and he thoought women should be pregnant and barefoot.

A forced sale is still ultimately a seizure (otherwise it wouldn't have to be forced), and a fine in accordance with terms to which you previously agreed is still a loss of property. Your suggestion that he is not "having his property tak[en]" seems to me to be objectively wrong. The rules to which he agreed as an NBA owner may make it legal, but the loss of property is still the loss of property. Whether or not you're willing to concede you misspoke on that point in suggesting that the seizure of millions of dollars is not having one's property taken will tell me precisely how interested you are in honestly discussing this issue. Most people are not interested in honest discussion, and I suspect you are not either, but you can prove me wrong if you like.

The LA Clippers are part of the NBA. If you want to become an NBA owner, you have to follow certain rules and it is agreed you can lose your ownership if you do something dentrimental. That is how it works.

And no, his property isn't being "taken" because he is going to get the value of it. Legally, taking someone's property generally means taken their property or assets without compensation.

I don't hate free speech; quite the opposite, I like it enough that I'd like to see people free to express their ideas without suffering consequences as a result of it. In other words, I want actual free speech, not merely an absence of governmental restriction regarding speech. It's pretty clear "our" society cannot handle that, though, so instead it's the witch hunts. I don't feel too bad for Mr. Sterling, he'll be economically fine, and as you've said, he's by no means a charming person. My concern is with the general cultural environment which results from this kind of hysteria. I get the feeling that I'm wasting my time trying to get you to understand that, though.

Welcome to the real world. If you do or say something dumb and horrible, you will be treated like a horrible person. As much as it is Donald Sterling's right to be a scumbag, it is the right of people as a whole to call him that and refuse to do business. That is how free speech goes. "Free speech without consequences" isn't free speech because you're essentially denying the freedom of those to SPEAK on the issue they disagree with at hand. Do you see how incredibly inane that is?

I don't see any problem with fining him or forcing him form the league IF his actions were punishable under the league's bylaws. I think there is a firm precedent in the NBA for the fines. I'm not so sure about seizing the franchise.

The NBA already limits speech as owners and players are not allowed to publicly criticize officials in certain ways. It has a dress code and certain other things.

Also, in telling his gf that she shouldn't bring black players to the game with her, THAT might be the statement that nails him as in some sense he is telling a customer who she may or may not purchase seats for and bring to games based solely on their race, which I think is certainly against league bylaws and probably a civil rights violation. Since she is not his legal wife, he might not enjoy the same level of protection as if she were family.

Quote:
If Silver had not taken such a dramatic step, would you have protested by changing the TV channel in the midst of these incredible playoffs? Would you stop buying NBA jerseys? Would other owners commit to providing truly equal opportunity workplaces for their teams and other businesses?

I've grown increasingly uncomfortable with the NFL over the concussion issue and have started to scale back my interest in the sport. I've gone from being an NFL fan to simply a Lions fan. I purchased NFL League Pass two years ago and did not this year in large part because of that.

There will always be a difference between the different purges. The act of purging is the commonality.

Here's a handy list of recent purges, prog bullying and intimidation:

http://handleshaus.wordpress.com/2013/12/26/bullied-and-badgered-pressured-and-purged/

Quote:

10-OCT-1959: Revilo Oliver purged from National Review. A complex personality – the sixth generation in his family to bear the burden of a purposefully palindromic name. Archive at Unz.org
20-APR-1968: Enoch Powell purged from British Conservative Party.
1969-1973: The ‘original’ race and intelligence ‘controversy’ hysteria over Jensen, Herrnstein, Draper, Wilson, and Shockley, et al. (see also Sociobiology)

19-JAN-1988: Jimmy ‘The Greek’ Snyder purged from CBS.
1989-1991 (and continuing): Related to the above, Linda Gottfredson’s torturous path.
NOV-1990: John Strugnell purged from the Dead Sea Scrolls project.
22-APR-1991: William F. Buckley devotes an entire issue of National Review to “In Search of Anti-Semitism: What Christians Provoke What Jews? Why? By Doing What? — And Vice Versa.” focused greatly on Pat Buchanan (and timed to coincide with his big for Presidential candidacy). Later, collected with responses, into a book.
1993 – Jospeh Sobran purged from National Review.
13-JAN-1993: Eden Jacobowitz charged by University of Pennsylvania with violating racial harassment policy by shouting ‘Water Buffalo’ at some large, rowdy black women. (He should have just said ‘Behemoth‘ like he was thinking in Hebrew). There was even a Doonesbury comic on it.
27-JUN-1995: Sam Francis purged from the Washington Times.
23-APR-1995: Frank Urban “Fuzzy” Zoeller loses his sponsors after Tiger Woods joke.
1997: Peter Brimelow and John O’Sullivan (and many others) purged from National Review.

20-APR-1999: Marge Schott finally gives up being “Baseball’s Big Red Headache“

30-JUN-2004: Rachel Ehrenfeld found liable by default judgment by British Court after successful libel-tourism suit brought by the Bin Mahfouz family (it’s kind of a patten with them). The case is important for illustrating not just the legal controversy, but the willingness of certain nations to extent to private parties the ability to commandeer the judicial apparatus on mere pretext for speech-suppressive ends.

24-MAR-2014: Brendan Eich experiences purging campaign to get him fired at CEO of Mozilla due to $1,000 donation in 2008 in support of California Proposition 8, which succeeded at the polls, if not in the courts. OkCupid goes all in on full, guilt-by-association excommunication . The flipside of campaign funding transparency is the the risk of being on the receiving end of the politics of personal destruction. Talk about a chilling effect. But, naturally, the same people would publicly lose their minds with maximum mouth foaming if they heard of a company firing someone because they contributed to the campaign to oppose proposition 8. UPDATE: Sigh, purged. Depressing and predictable. Only missing the ‘to spend more time with his family’ line.

22-APR-2014: Charles Murray spiked from Azusa Pacific University. (HT: Sailer)
26-ARP-2014: Donald J. Sterling playing defense after ‘racist’ comments. (HT: Sailer) (UPDATE: fined, purged.) Look, by all accounts, this guy was an awful sleezeball and deserved what he got. Fine. Nevertheless, this was also obviously a conspiratorial, baited setup (100 hours of secretly and illegally recorded conversations with the floozy?), and no one but Sailer’s been covering the real story behind the ouster instead of leveraging the MSM-hysteria-catnip of the race-opera to cover it up. No One. That should trouble you. And no one’s been making the obvious, prospective point, which is that today, Big Brother Is Everyone. Hell is other people. With smartphones, everybody’s carrying their own personal wire all the time. If the adventuress isn’t convicted, then the signal to everyone else is that there is zero cost to extracting something juicy from the right person, and the deterrence effect is destroyed. Imagine a future where everyone is their own Stasi, keeping an option-for-extortion retirement fund archive, and incentivized to get people to trust them and reveal their un-PC opinions in private. People, it’s all going downhill.
26-APR-2014: Paul Weston arrested for Quoting Churchill. (HT: Steyn) and do check out the photos at Liberty GB.

Telling your girlfriend who has intentionally goaded you to the point of hysterical frustration that your relationship will end if she publicly associates with blacks is in no way similar to denying the sale of tickets to blacks.

Kareem has it (mostly) right.

From Titus' list:

Quote:
25-SEP-2013: David Gilmour two-minutes-hated for literature judgment.

Gilmour didn't suffer any material loss from his "two minute hate" over supposedly sexist comments. The worst that happened was that he got lambasted by some media people(and defended by some others), and some students held a protest against his views. To call this a purge, using a term associated with stalinist mass murder, is over the top.

But hey, here is another recent example from Canada, involving an academic who was basically the ideological godfather of modern Canadian coservativism, and one-time mentor to the current prime minister. Unlike Gilmour, he actually lost about five paying gigs within a few hours of that video going viral.

I notice he's not on the list of "purged" conservatives, even though the compiler of said list apparently follows Canadian news. Innocent oversight, I'm sure.

Yeah, I take your point about entertainers needing to maintain a certain public persona as part of their job. To re-tool the example a bit, if an obscure producer of Mr. Rogers Neighbourhood was caught making pro-NAMBLA statements, I'd support PBS' right to can the guy, even though he's not an entertainer, just associated with the show behind the scenes. That's the sort of case I was thinking of with my Disney example.

And you're right, if Rogers(who by all accounts was a noble and scholarly man, sincerely commited to the well-being of children) had made those hypothetical comments, the show would probably fail on its own devices, even if PBS tried to keep it going. Though I suspect there would be a lot of outrage against the network in the meantime, and few if any conservatives rushing forth to defend Rogers as a free-speech martyr.

In some cases the individual is purged successfully, sometimes the leftists fail, sometimes the purpose has other motives (like Tokowitz, who is being purged so that another group can get a good deal on an under-performing franchise in a tier 1 market). Generally, the point is to enforce leftists norms, which are always shifting, and shifting only to the left. It is as it has always been all around the world. In America, the process is speeding up.

Did he say they were better? I thought he said they were treated differently in Israel (ie black jews are treated like dogs - a generally true statement).

Here's a great example of particularistic (ie not universalistic) values on display:

I guess you can say that his name change was good for the Jews.

Can you imagine the anti-Semitism that would have been rekindled today had it been billionaire Donald Tokowitz spewing these racist rants?

Instead, that eminent icon of moral philosophy, Snoop Doggy Dog, says Tokowitz is a "bitch ass, redneck, white-bread etc etc".

I don't see what the big deal is about his comments. I understand it's controversial, but he's basically expecting his girlfriend to act the same way we have to act in Korea. There are cultural pressures and expectations, and some people respond differently to them.

Sterling said that he didn't care if she brought Magic Johnson and other black guys over or even has sex with him. He was okay with that. But he didn't want her to be broadcasting everything she does on Instagram or for her to be bringing him or other black guys to games because he was getting phone calls about it and was being harassed about it by others.

It's similar to how our bosses probably don't care what we do in private, but if they start getting phone calls from parents and other people complaining about seeing us hanging out in the neighborhood with too many Korean women, they're probably going to get frustrated and may say something to us about it. In fact, I've seen posts on here where bosses have made such remarks to foreign teachers.

If we hang out and chat with whites in front of the hagwon all the time, I don't think our bosses would care. If we hang out all of the time with bearded brown guys in mandresses in front of the hagwon and parents start asking questions to the boss, our bosses are probably going to get frustrated and may ask us to be more low key, due to the cultural pressures being put on them.

Ruben Patterson was arrested for beating his wife and was convicted of attempting to rape his kid's nanny, and was allowed to continue to play his NBA career as a registered sex offender. Those weren't his only crimes during his NBA career either. And he hasn't been the only criminal allowed to continue his NBA career. But if you're an old white geezer and make a perceived racist comment to your girlfriend during a heated argument in private, you're banned for life and fined $5,000,000. The most absurd part about it is how Sterling probably wouldn't have been in this much trouble with the NBA if he had beat her up and tried to rape her. Physical violence and sexual violence are relatively culturally acceptable, but verbally offending someone is much, much worse. Rolling Eyes

There will always be a difference between the different purges. The act of purging is the commonality.

Here's a handy list of recent purges, prog bullying and intimidation:

Sometimes bad things happen to bad people. Sterling's is just such a case. We can debate your theory of purges the next time, when the figure has some redeeming quality or other.
