Have been asking around w/ friends for the past few weeks but no one seems to have any good recommendation and mostly just crap stories about some shady practices.
Anyone have a good recommendation or have used the places they advertise on craigslist? |

Try that Encar SK site. It'll let you see prices to get an idea of what to expect. Then, get an ajossi you know to go to a local used car dealership with you and negotiate like a mofo. Let him know your budget and you can all work something out.
I took my ajossi out to a nice dinner later on. |

| Just keep scanning craigslist. You can find owners selling good cars for half of what dealers sell for. Theres also various buy and sell groups on facebook. |

I'll give you my experience with buying a car.
I went to a few used car dealers. They were way, way overpriced and essentially wasted my time. I told them that I had seen some online and they told me that usually the online cars didn't exist and were just bait to get you to come out to a dealer.
I went to encar, found a couple that I liked. I took my brother-in-law and went to test drive the cars I was looking at. Every car I was interested in was, in fact, a real car. I found one I liked and bought it for a great price. I ended up selling that car for exactly what I paid for it 2 years later, if that tells you anything. |

Buying from an individual you know and trust is the best option perhaps. At least you will know that the car hasn’t been in an accident and regular maintenance was done properly.
But the biggest advantage is the price. Family or close friends are willing to let their car go for what a dealer would give them, or just a tad bit more.
Encar prices seem decent but you can be sure that they have a 25-30% margin on sales. Might not matter much in case of a 1-2 million car but at 5 or 10 million it makes a huge difference. |

This has been the biggest problem for me so far.
I have visited half a dozen dealerships and all of them are trying to pawn off cars that look as if they never had one single regular maintenance preformed.
I don't know who they are expecting to sell these cars to, but anyone with even a slight inkling about cars would run away from all of them. |
