Slave Labor Program.

Read the contract carefully. The devil is in it.

You will work 300 minutes per week (5 hours) in the classroom MORE THAN the next guy down the street (who is earning the same money).

You will NOT get NHIC medical or NPS (regardless of what they tell you).

If you are desperate for a job /any job then it gets you to Korea, gets you a job and you do get paid.

I work for this SLP.

We have the insurance.

You'll teach 1320 minutes (22 hours) a week if you're an afternoon teacher.

Calculating kindergarten hours is a little more complicated, but it's about 30 hours a week if you're the 9-6 shift.

what is the curriculum like? is it easy (none to little prep) and straightforward or do you have to do a ton of actual prep and make your own stuff?

You'll teach 1455 minutes a week if you're an afternoon teacher. That's 24 hours and 15 minutes. 15 hours and 45 minutes of prep time a week.

I got offered the 9-6 shift. It seems like there is a lot of room in the contract for extra work to be added in to your days without you being able to refuse it. Does that happen? Do you get paid on time?

Pro tip: if you're going to be working 9 hours per day, don't take anything less than 2.4m per month.

You just do what the teacher's edition tells you to do, but I incorporate my own stuff when there is extra time and on review days.

Prep time is devoted to copying resource sheets, grading journals, and doing progress reports at month's end.

They never ask you to work extra classes, if that's what you're asking. It's possible you might stay extra to correct journals or write progress reports at the end of the month, although it's a rarity. There is one who seems to often, but he was given a heavier workload due to his experience.

Always paid on time. This school always does right by us with regard to labor laws and basic decency.

BTW, I calculated the afternoon teaching hours incorrectly. It's 1320 minutes a week.

So they don't use the standard SLP contract any more?

Somehow I find that hard to believe even if your current class loads are as low as you say they are. (if they still use the standard contract you can be expected to do the extra when business picks up).

When I was there we got a full 21 classes of "80 minutes" that were in actuality 21 classes of 90 minutes (we weren't allowed to pop out during the 10 minute breaks but were expected to remain in the classroom).

We didn't get the NHIC booklet either even though they claimed we were covered (we weren't). NPS was also a non-starter.

but your current schedule didn't address any of the issues that I faced at that same franchise a few years ago.

If they still use the standard SLP contract it means they can hold you to it (even if they currently aren't) and their is nothing you can do when they add in the missing classes.

NHIC - do you actually have the booklet from NHIC or are you just "told" that you are covered - "present your ARC when you see a doctor". (same song and dance we were handed - and we actually were not covered)

NPS account?? If you really have NHIC then you should also have NPS. (how did that song go... "You can't have one without the other".)

Yes, we all have the insurance. Many of us have used it.

And every teacher that has left since I have been here has collected their pension and subsequently lived on it on their SE Asia travels. As did all the teachers that left when my previous coworkers were new.

With that said, the contract is as you state and I do remember they add classes for one month in the summer and one month in the winter during public school holidays. 9-6 kindy shift doesn't (can't) participate. They ask first who is willing to take the biggest workload and distribute accordingly, and they pay overtime despite the fact that the contract says 21 80 minute classes is the contracted amount.

Did these guys go and get professional or something? This place use to have an awful reputation. First thing I use to hear about the place was SLAVE LABOR PROGRAM. Heard it enough consistently over the years and Ttompatz's experiences were pretty common enough. Maybe they've mended their ways or you just got lucky in a good branch.
