I think it's called Greco? Anyone know the deal?

Just looking for something different in my nightlife. Wouldn't mind hearing some jazz music. I'm not an aficionado or anything, so if it isn't of the best quality, that's fine. Just looking for not outrageously priced drinks and a nice (somewhat romantic) vibe.

Is there a facebook page where I can view the schedule? Or do they play at certain times every weekend night?

Anyone?

According to Chip's Maps (local zine), they only have live jazz once a month. I stopped in when they first opened. It's got a lot of funky decor. The cocktails we had were decent. They played jazz and blues...mostly. A group of older Koreans came in and some trot music was played. We left at that point. Worth stopping in if you are in HBC to see if it fits your mood. No smoking inside.

Evans is nice, but you have to get there at least an hour early on Fri and Sat. if you want to choose your seat. They tend to have a variety of acts and tend to go into more fusion jazz stuff. Nearby there is De Solar and Club Palm. DeSolar usually is kinda empty but is nice and mellow if you just want to relax. Almost always cool jazz/bebop/modal stuff. Occasionally they get bigger acts like Maro Band. Club Palm gets decent acts, but if you are there strictly to listen to music, you might be disappointed- the vibe there is that the music is somewhat in the background and everyone else is talking.

Evans, De Solar, and All That Jazz in Itaewon all feature heavily on the music- People are expected to be quiet during performances, no smoking.

There's a couple others out there- Soul to God and Once in a Blue Moon. I've never been to either one. I think they are both more "upscale" and have pricier drinks and maybe a dress code. If you can, you should go to Once in a Blue Moon on a Friday and see the Ryu Bok Sung Latin Jazz All Stars (you can see him at other bars, but he regularly performs there). Guy puts on a great performance and is one of the legends of jazz in Korea.

There's some new club called Pontifex Musicus I stumbled across while searching this. Never been there and it looks like a bunch of college student jazz bands and all their friends go there. Might be worth a view.

Thanks for the info. What is All That Jazz like? It's a minute or two from my house, so I'd like to try it. How are the prices? Do I need reservations? Do they have live music on weekend nights?

Prices are reasonable. You usually don't need a reservation. They usually have live music both weekdays and weekends. If you want to see a nice modern fusion band, go on Sat. the 24th for JHG Group at 8:30. Or go the day before to see the Han Sang Won band if you want something vocal.

I want... slow, sad jazz. Or a cute girl singing from atop a piano.

Anyway just checked their menu and bottles of Cass are 8,000. Not sure I can hang with that.

Wow, Steel Rails comin' through with the info!

Personally I really like Club Evans. There's definitely a reason why you gotta get there early. Best acts in Seoul. All That Jazz is second best. I've heard Blue Moon is good but over priced. Club Palm is nice but go on a slow night. I can imagine that a weekend is probably not too fun what with the open doors and all.

I got a glass of Hennessy VSOP or 10,000 so I didn't think a beer would be that expensive. Maybe they're trying to discourage the uncouth Korean beer drinking non-jazz aficionado from mucking it up. Sucks a nice mellow jazz-n-beer drinker gets caught up in that. Anyways, cover was only 5,000 when I went. With my single drink that was okay. I did get a martini for the second set, but I didn't know how much it was because I got 3 other people drinks. I remember not being floored by my bill tho.

On second thought don't quote me on that Hennessy price...I might be remembering it wrong...
