SLP is regarded as Slave Labor Program.

That said, avoid.

Says a person who's never worked there. . .

I worked at the dong-ilsan (Beakma) branch of SLP. It is one of the better hagwons around. There is also a branch in Juyop, which is owned by the same people but they have different managers. I can't really speak as well to that one, just to say the owners are fair and pay on time.

MedellinHeel, feel free to PM me if you want.

Isn't amazing how often these SLP threads pop up? I swear there's a new one every coupla weeks, like clockwork, and every time people say the same thing. Let me save us some time:

Slave Labor Program (check)
You don't know, some of them are good (check)
ttompatz points out the terrible contract stuff (TBD)
someone else's friend's cousin's sister chimes in with some hearsay (TBD)
other people generally pile on with more of the slave stuff (TBD)

Rinse and repeat.

A good friend of mine worked at the one in Ilsan. They loaded him down with extra work. Later, they didn't pay him the promised overtime. He said it was terrible.

I just looked at an SLP contract on the 'contract forum.' It's surely one of the worst contracts I have seen. I can't imagine working that deal and then being screwed over outside of the contract.

It's not "some of them" that are good. It's this one. The one that I actually worked for, and I have first hand knowledge of. First hand knowledge that you and the other posters do not have.

Hello again,

Can I bring up this topic again of working at the SLA in Ilsan?

Does anyone currently work at this branch? I received a job offer!

Also, if it's easier - my email is [email protected]

Thank you!
Megan

Just received a contract through from SLP - admittedly I'm quite new at this but it looked shocking to me!

The only first-hand knowledge that most posters need is the generic contract which is followed by MOST SLP institutions. If on the other hand YOURS did NOT follow the generic contract then it was only a SLP in name.

Some choice tidbits from the standard SLP contract

Quote:
"The Teacher is expected to devote no less than 2.5 hours a day at the Institute for lesson planning, student evaluations, teachers’ meeting, consultation with parents, and supervision of play. The first 2 weeks are for training and orientation for which the teacher is paid 50% of the half month salary."

Quote:
"There are three or four teacher development courses in a year and they may be on Saturdays. The teacher is to attend the teacher development courses without extra payment."
( Read "may be" as "will be".)

Quote:
"The teacher will be covered by Korean National Health Insurance. According to the government guideline for teachers, the monthly insurance charge will be shared by the Institute and the teacher. Coverage will be from the date of joining to Korean Medical Institute Union, commencing approximately 2 weeks after the teacher’s arrival of Korean due to requirements of the immigration and taxation department. However, it is not mandatory for foreign teachers"

(The last sentence is an outright lie)

There are more but these are enough to give the flavor (so as to speak.) So yes there may be good SLP schools out there...but if there are...they don't follow this contract.
