|
|
Hi all, I just found out today that my hagwon is getting shut down next Friday, I was expected for the hagwon to get shut down because there were warning signs, but I was very surprised when my co teacher told me that the hagwon is getting shut down next week. I was provided housing by the school so are they going to promptly kick me out on Friday or are they going to give me an opportunity to pay for housing myself? Any other things that I should be on the lookout for? Any tips from people in my situation would be appreciated. |

They may or may not pay the next month's rent for you.
Be ready to move on short notice.
Ask your co-workers about a goshiwan in your area.
Start looking for a new job NOW.
GET a Letter of Release from your employer post dated to next Friday.
Do it ASAP.
This will enable you to transfer your visa with a minimum of fuss.
Not having one will be a MAJOR PAIN IN THE AZZ when you want to start a new job.

good idea on the letter of release I'll get on that ASAP. Do you think I'll be forced to pay back airfare as well as the 3 months of rent that I've lived here? I just want to know what to expect this shit is such short notice. |

If they have no money they may make excuses to not pay you for the last month. (can't get blood out of a stone) but legally they would lose at a labor tribunal.
The problem is that you can't get blood out of a stone and they may well just disappear next Friday and leave everyone in the lurch (common enough occurrence) and leave no one to drag to a labor tribunal.
Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Please don't tell me if they asked you to you would actually consider handing over like $3000 to them...... You don't have to pay back shit. |

No, I'm hoping they pay me what I owe and that I go my own way. The hagwon owner seemed nice enough and he even drove me to the immigration office to help me get my alien registration card. I just want to prepare for any worst case scenario. |

Anything of value at the school? Laptops would be preferable. Other computers? I'll give you a nice price for a video projector. Get yours! |

Just trying to bring something positive to a crappy situation. You've gotten a lot of good advice in this thread though. If you act fast there is no reason why you can't end up on your feet in a better situation.
Good luck. |
