You mean to tell me K-Pop isn't the biggest thing going? That when the Korean media says they are a global sensation, taking the world by storm, it just ain't so?

I'm not positive but I think they mean biggest as in the most members. Iirc, they have 48 members.

You think K-pop is bad? That AKB48 crap is a 100x worse. It just doesn't end either. There are many groups like that with their city's initials even in Indonesia.

I read through their wiki a while back, it's actually kind of fascinating.

Quote:
AKB48 (read "A.K.B. Forty-eight") is a Japanese idol girl group, initially named after the Akihabara (Akiba for short) area of Tokyo where the group's theater is located, and their original roster of 48 members. As of May 2014, the group has expanded to include 140 members[2] whose ages range from early teens to mid-20s.[3][4] The idea of AKB48's producer Yasushi Akimoto was to create a girl group that, unlike a regular pop group that gives occasional concerts and that is mostly seen on television, would have its own theater and perform there on a daily basis; the fans would always be able to go and see the girls live.[5] This "idols you can meet" concept includes the formation of different teams[6] that are able to rotate performances and to perform simultaneously in events at various locations,[7] as well as the organisation of "handshake" events, where fans can briefly interact with band members.[5] Akimoto has also expanded the AKB48 concept to several sister groups throughout Japan, and also in China and Indonesia.
The one group/organization might be bigger than the whole K-pop industry, and the approach to management seems quite Darwinian. Given that the 'creator' probably pockets most of the dough, I can only imagine the per-person take home is basically peanuts. Plus stuff like this happens.

In February 2013, member Minami Minegishi appeared in a YouTube video with a shaved head to apologize after it was reported by a tabloid that she had spent a night with a man in violation of her contract, and had been consequently demoted to trainee status.

Seems like a pretty shit gig.

No such thing as a talented artist striking out on their own here, huh? I'm guessing there's probably a bullying and intimidation tactic if some srtist with creativity tries to as well?

I often hear western pop music in many stores here lately anyhow. More than K pop. I'd love to hear western rock, but anything's better than repetitive K pop dangles. Some of the girl videos are pretty to look at, but somebody save me from jumping in front the KTX to make the music stop.

The winner in that case would be a North American, even if it was a solo act...

Reading the headline to this post I thought the topic was going to be about the band Weezer.
