The amount of people looking to teach is increasing so schools are taking advantage of this by either reimbursing teachers upon arrival or only offering flights home. There are still listings from schools offering round-trip airfare, but the more experience/education you have, the more likely you are to get one of these positions. |

Part of it is supply and demand, and there's also the increasing cost of flights.
Schools have to pay to the new teacher coming, the old teacher leaving plus severance and recruiter fees. It's an expensive process, so somethings got to give.
It's a shame but as long as people take these roles schools are only going to offer such deals.
There's also a newer trend of no housing in areas away from Seoul. |

It's a true race to the bottom. Only way I'd ever go back is if I got a public school job. |

Should I decline these jobs with only one way ticket? seems there are still jobs that grant round trip. |

Calculate remuneration package value.
Calculate opportunity cost.
Calculate lost revenue waiting for that "better offer".
Calculate expenses.
Derive value for time.
If it is worth it to you then take it.
If it is NOT then don't.

Seems like this is almost standard now in / around Seoul.

Public schools are getting worse though too.

things got better until about 2008 - wages went up, single apartments (vs. shared) became common. It's been downhill since then.
Now public schools are getting bad (just being dickish for no reason, just to show they can), and uni salaries are really low. Definitely declining. |

Yes, this seems to be more and more common. Whether it will stick depends on how successfully the schools offering jobs with reduced pay and benefits can fill their open positions.
This new benefit structure means schools will buy you a ticket to Korea but they no longer offer airfare at the end of the contract. Many are also changing contract terms so that the incoming ticket must be repaid if you don't complete 12 months instead of 6.
This change was announced some years ago and many posters didn't believe that it would come. It's here. It's hard to know how far it will spread or if it will become the norm.
Right now the best schools still offer two way airfare: They reimburse the teacher on arrival at the school for incoming airfare (which has to be paid back if you don't finish 6 months) or pay a cash bonus if you're already in Korea, and they give you a ticket or the cash value of a ticket when you complete a 12 month contract.
Of course it's possible that you can find a job with no return airfare but with a higher monthly salary instead - maybe 2.3 million won per month or more for a newbie. So, you have to evaluate the entire pay package including all benefits, quality of housing, difficulty of the teaching etc. It could be that your total package is better without return airfare. If not, then, as mentioned above, you have to decide if it's worth waiting for something better to come along.
The world is getting poorer, living standards are falling and life is getting tougher for most people. You gotta make your best choices and move on. |

Actually, the opposite is true.
You wouldn’t know it from the endless torrent of gloomy news but the world is getting a lot richer. In fact, according to the Credit Suisse 2011 Global Wealth Report, total household wealth in the world has reached an all-time high of US$231-trillion. This enormous sum, which encompasses real assets including homes as well as financial assets, and is net of debts, is equivalent to $51,000 of wealth for every adult in the world.
It turns out the financial crisis was only a temporary setback in the march of wealth accumulation across the globe. Although total wealth in Europe and North America remains slightly below the 2007 peak, rapid growth in the wealth of emerging markets in Asia, Latin America and Africa helped lift total wealth by 18% over the past year. Unlike the U.S., wealth in Canada has fully recovered from the crisis.

Although global wealth has more than doubled since 2000, there is a cadre of countries that have zoomed ahead with growth rates of more than 10% annually. These include Brazil, Chile, China, Columbia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and South Africa. For the most part, it has been the rise of a middle class in these populous nations that is propelling world wealth to new heights.
This month the most accurate source for global data on the size of the world’s economies got a makeover. As a result, we have measures of economic growth and relative income across countries that are better than ever. These numbers suggest something surprising: a world of ubiquitously increasing wealth, where predictions of Malthusian traps and permanent poverty look increasingly archaic.
