I had my interview the other day with someone from EPIK. At first he was having difficulty hearing me. Something went wrong. I had to do the interview over the phone while I left the video on. Then the audio cleared up and we finished the interview over the computer and thru Skype.

I thought it went well. First, we went over the small errors that I made on the application. Then he told me to check off level one because I had more than two years of teaching experience. That was nice. I had put level three because I wasn't sure if they counted hagwon experience as real teaching. I just taught in Korea for two years.

He asked me why I decided to come to Korea. The typical questions that they ask at every interview. He seemed impressed. Time was running short and he had to conduct another interview. The whole process was about an hour, and it started at 12:30am.

Now it's a waiting game. He told me either Thursday/Friday that I will get an email stating if I got the job or not. What gets me is why do they make you go through this process if they aren't going to hire you?

It is what happens during this process that helps them decide if they should hire you.

It is where they eliminate those they don't want. I guess you will find out this weekend which group you were placed into.

...is that a serious question?

And to clarify, "you'll get an email stating if you got the job or not" really means you're on to the document submission phase. If EPIK is satisfied that those are all in order they'll recommend you to an Office of Education, who might even then decide they don't want to hire you (although ostensibly the coordinators only recommend people the OEs will want to hire). Really, you only know that you got the job when you receive a contract, you return it, and your visa gets approved.

Regardless, best of luck!

I just got the response. I didn't get the job.

Maybe I shouldn't have told the person that interviewed me that i sent in my background check just last week. He didn't seem to do though. He told me to check off flexible. That I could start in August or September.

I'm kinda bummed. The interview seemed good. Then again, you just never know what's going thru the heads of the person who is interviewing you.

Sad

You live in the states and just sent for your CBC last week?

That explains the why - there is not much likelihood of your documents being ready in time.

I guess GEPIK is the next try (after you get your documents in hand) or shoot again for the Feb intake of EPIK.

I understand what you're saying ttompatz, but when I told my interviewer that I had just sent out my fingerprints he told me that they hire in September as well. He made it sound like it wasn't going to be an issue and if I don't get them in time for the start of school in August then I could always start in September.

I also told him that I'd be in Thailand while my paperwork was being completed in the states. Maybe he was turned off when I said that I was going to be in Thailand? I should have kept my mouth shut. Sad

Yeah, don't say you'll be in any SE Asian country unless you want them to think you're a pervert. Nothing wrong with going down there, but don't tell them that as some Koreans will get the wrong idea about the place. Also, it makes you come across as a backpacker. You want to seem as professional as possible.

That said, it could be any reason as EPIK doesn't give reasons and the interviewer may have just rejected you because he felt like it. Hard to say.

I think the issue was that I talked too much and I gave my interviewer too much information. I talked way too much and this probably hurt my chances.

Lesson learned.

That's true. I should have known better than to say that I'm going to be in Thailand while my background check is being processed. Maybe he thought I was too much trouble.

I looked at it differently. I have a girlfriend in Thai and I thought it would be to my advantage that I was close to Korea. I'm not a pervert and a backpacker. I can now understand how vacationing in Thailand sounds to someone. I should have known better. At least I didn't bring up my gf.

Just remember don't send any money. No matter how often she promises not to go to the bar where you met her again or how often the family buffalo gets sick. Laughing

Lol...

She has asked for money. She wants me to pay for her apartment while I'm working away. I told her no and we had this big fight. Smile

She works as a secretary for a sports company.

Welcome to China!=)

Still time to apply. I'm in a really laid back town near Shanghai. I've enjoyed my life here more than Korea. Of course, everywhere has it's bad and good points.

Your 2-years of experience qualifies you for a public school job on a 'Z' professionals visa.

I can get you in touch with some people.
