...which is the nature of being positive, hence why they are not negative.

Well, it can be a component of trying to stay positive, yes, but it can also just be an attempt to mask their true feelings, as they were taught.

Either way, I never noticed any more negativity here than any other place, as I said earlier.

I agree Sector7G. Look no further than actual Koreans to tell you the problems with this place. I've heard far worse from them than what's been said on Dave's. Of course, they say it with a smile.

I think the negative energy thing is partly explained by public selfishness. Selfish people are rarely happy, and the whole 'you're not in my bubble so toss off' attitude to others isn't emotionally healthy. Opening the door for someone, offering a smile, saying 'good morning' to people at the bus stop, stopping so people can use the crosswalk, acknowledging other peoples' existence...all little things that affect one's daily mood. If everyone is just considered an obstacle, hindrance, or nuisance then of course that takes its psychological toll. I think if Koreans treated people better they'd be happier themselves.

Being decent and sociable to people you encounter in your daily life, including those you are unlikely to ever benefit from, is its own reward.

There are stories around that just before they left in 1945 the Japanese drove metal spikes into Korean mountains to disrupt the qi.

Plus the qi remains at around ground level, so if you live above the third floor in an apartment building, you ain't getting enough.

lol.

but lets hear a koreans perspective on these spikes that are to blame for koreas misfortunes.

Quote:
When Korea beat Japan at the end of the Second World War and the occupying Japanese soldiers ran away, the provisional government sent geographers and shamanists out across the country to locate the large pole-like iron spikes, but Japan, with a new plan to dominate Korea economically rather than militarily, refused to reveal where they had been placed, and not all of them could be located.

With both areas of flat land in Korea having been populated, feng shui experts said that the sense of unease and something "not quite being right" that was pervading Korea must be due to iron Japanese stakes remaining in sparsely visited mountainous regions. Anxious to continue the search, the government encouraged mountain climbing as a national pastime. After the Korean War, the new pastime also provided an additional benefit in the area of mine clearance, but over time it was the hunt for those large thorns sticking into Korea's heart which rose to prominence again

So that explains all the mountain hiking. Funny article.

Maybe that's how the fan myth started. The gi builds up until it's too much for a human spirit to withstand. Or maybe Japanese psy-ops.

They do take it seriously though. Kim Dae-jung had his parents' graves moved to Jongin to increase his chances of getting elected. Jongin is supposedly the perfect place for a tomb, gi-wise.

I despise ignorance and primitive superstion. Whether it's the Jesus type back home or this silliness. Mentally some people are still living in the bronze age. I had a Korean friend who's daughter was frequently ill. He took her to a shaman who said her name didn't fit, so he legally had her name changed. I went with him to the Gu-office and stood in amazement as he officially changed her name. And this guy had a Masters degree.

Confused

Maybe when he said you were just here he was saying that you are an alcoholic. He is somehow more classy than a liquor store, because he has some expensive drinks or some bs.

For me it's just pay and goodbye.

Also they are more of a hindrance than help. Same anywhere I think. I would rather look around and make a choice on my own.

Btw, i thought you were referring to daves having a negative energy - that would be an eye opening topic...

^ I also thought this! But indeed, there is some amount of negative energy on Dave's...!! I've only ever looked at the South Korea forums though.

As a new person coming to Gangwan-do through EPIK in September, I have found so much negative stuff on here (and yet I keep coming back...) that I wonder WHY people continue to come/stay in Korea. Is it the money...? I may well arrive, hate it, and end up completely agreeing with all the bad points on Dave's. But I need to experience it for myself before I judge.

As you were.
