I lived in Korea for a few years and worked for a Korean company in America for a few years. Now there are no Koreans in my life and I have to say man, I miss Korea and Koreans. They are genuinely good people and Korea is genuinely a good place. I know, there are issues, but who doesn't have issues?
What I can't stand are people who take stabs and jabs at Korea just because it makes them feel more secure. All of the Koreans I personally know (I know a lot), as idiosyncratic as they may be, are good people. They work hard, they support their families in an honest fashion, and they are successful. I think the world could learn a lot from Koreans (and East Asian culture in general), and anyone who takes a stab at their reputation, just for the sake of self enlightenment, is jealous, IMHO. Hate on it. |

Maybe the OP overstates his case a bit, but me too, I have no ax to grind with Korea or Koreans. |

Please don't call me a troll. I'm saying this just for the sake of making a comment based on my opinion of both a country and culture in/around which I was. I like where I am now, but there is something unique and special about Korea/Koreans that I miss from time to time. |

If he told us what he thought was unique and special about them, people would have something to respond to. |

Agree with everything in the original post, especially the above!!
Peculiar listening to people on Dave's (who come from US/UK/AU) talk bad about KR. Those Western cultures are now firmly in a state of decline; plagued by stupidity, rudeness, unhappiness, laziness, dishonesty, drugs, and violence.
Compared to that toilet-bowl, Koreans really have it together. |

OP's logic is as dumb as his post - so if every black person I meet is a thief, then I should get angry at anyone who says every black person is not a thief. Unbelievable that racist posts like the OP's are allowed to slide on this site but with dudes like Steelrails defending child murderers nothing here really surprises me any more. |

True but they also often lead very self centered lives with little concern for anyone outside their social circles. It's why the Sewol happened. It's why Asiana's first priority after the crash in San Francisco was deflecting blame rather than passenger safety. It's why Korea has such a high pedestrian fatality rate. Korean drivers often speed through crosswalks with no concern for the lives of others. It's why no one intervenes when they witness a woman getting beat. It's why I've had experiences with Koreans at work who ignore me or spread gossip about me. As a foreigner, I'm not part of their inner social circles so they feel no obligation to treat me well. |

Right, people get bitter (unobjective).
Which is why it's nice when someone posts something objective. |

I live and work in Korea. There are Koreans in my life, relatives, friends, etc. Most of these people are wonderful. Some of them are far from it.

Pros and Cons. Nothing extra ordinarily special about the place or its culture in general. |

Unique and special? Why can't I just make a statement out of the sake of making a statement without being labelled as a troll. So funny how people just come here to insult me (user "metalhead" {I'll bet you don't know the first thing about metal; dude cheekily comes here with an excuse to call black people thieves, yet calls me racist based on the original posting: what a tool you are}).
Kepler, you make valid points, but you also say Korea has high traffic fatality rates. You haven't seen anything until you went to the center of China, Mexico, or even here (KSA). Korea is pale in comparison to these countries. And you mention that Koreans who exclude you from their social circles don't treat you well, as if all Koreans do that? Yes, they consider the family first, it's part of their culture. Perhaps you have a social interaction deficiency?
Honestly. Why can't someone just make a post without having to be ridiculed? I look forward to coming back to Korea this summer, where yes, there is arrogance and rudeness, and disorganization (I can think of many places that are far more disorganized), yada yada yada, but also efficiency, lack of severe obesity and laziness, in addition to lack of gun violence, illiteracy, and people are (gasp) intelligent (wow, most Koreans I know are fully functional in their bi/trilingual abilities. Honestly, the country (I have also lived in China and spent a lot of time in Japan) has their [insert explicit here] together.
Regardless, I love you for showing your true colors. Why not get outside and enjoy your lives rather than coming here to vent your dissatisfaction with people who choose to see the good in Korea? If you hate it, you should pack up and leave. When I lived in Korea (spent nearly five years) I dreaded running into foreigners who would remain in their social circles of alcoholics and b**ch about Korea and how much they hated it, yet they stayed for the money. Honestly, if you want to make money in teaching ESL, why are you even in Korea? Why?!!
The reason I posted this was because I was sick of reading anti-Korean statements from Japanese online, which brings me back to my original statement: anyone who takes a stab at their reputation, just for the sake of self enlightenment, is jealous.
Honestly, you must be jealous. It's sad. |

So, it's gone from your enjoyment of Korea/Koreans, to Korea's crappiness is better than some other country's crappiness. Not exactly glowing.
Hey, if person A digs korea - cool! I'm sincerely glad for them.
If person B doesn't dig Korea - that's cool too. It's not for everyone.
Heck, I've found that for me, and the years that I've been here, things have changed. What I enjoyed as a single person, is not something I enjoy as a married father.
But I don't begrudge ppl for feeling different about this place than me.
Are all Koreans hard working? Are all inconsiderate? As with anywhere, there's a particular balance. And each country's balance may suit ppl differently. |

Uh, where did I say that "Korea's crappiness is better than some other country's crappiness?" Where? I didn't say that.

And I don't come to Dave's simply to take the piss out of people because they have viewpoints that differ with mine (some dude who thinks he's a metalhead certainly does).

Seems to me from my experience there and working with Koreans elsewhere in the world that there is a far greater amount of them who are hard working. No they're not all considerate, again, I didn't make a statement that said they "are" all considerate. |
