How do you move out of a villa or apartment? What happens with your original key money? I moved into my place a few years ago. I'm technically in the middle of a lease period. Anyone move out during this time and try to get a new place? Not sure what the typical notice period is and how long it takes to get the key money back.

How long will it take you to find a replacement to take over your lease? The owner will keep your money until the lease is finished or until he gets a deposit from someone else (arranged through you, usually).

Did you sign a renewed lease?

If you completed your lease but just continued living there month by month (thats common) then a couple months notice is customary. You should get your key money back immediately on moving out.

If you did sign on again for another fixed period & are leaving early, then its incumbent on you to find a takeover or to rely on your agent to do so, before you'll see your money back.

I've never signed up for another lease formally beyond my first year. I just renewed verbally each year, I guess. I assumed that might have had the same effect as being legal. Maybe it isn't. I'm a couple of months into my new period technically.

So, I guess this means I may have to wait until next spring to change places or not? If I just move out at the end of my period, then do I get the key money back or do I have to wait a while to get back the deposit?
