I am looking to teach in Korea with a six month contract starting jan/February/March ending June/July/august 2015. I've only found full year contracts posted so far,
Does anyone know if such a position can be found, and ideally with the school system, colleges or government.
If so, where do I look, TESL certified, some ESL teaching experience locally in Canada, 1 or 2 months worth.
Many thanks for any assistance,

The chances of you:
- sitting in your living room in Canada,
- finding a 6-month contract in Korea as an
- "entry level EFL teacher"
- based on NO training and NO experience
are slim to none.
With VERY RARE exceptions in the TaLK program they just don't happen, especially in the public school system. http://www.talk.go.kr/ .
IF you held a related PhD you might (while you are sitting abroad) find something for 1-term.
IF you had some experience AND you were already in Korea and you were able to transfer your visa then a 6 month contract might be do-able.
It is just too expensive in terms of time, effort and energy (visa processing time, recruiters, flights, etc) to fly someone over for 6 months (for an entry level job) where there are LOTS of people willing to do a full year (at the same cost to the employer) already sitting in Korea and plenty more who are willing to take a position for a full school year.
You also need to be aware that the school year effectively ends at the end of Dec. and, with the exception of the last 2 weeks in February, kids are on holidays until March 2.
And in closing, you aren't qualified for a "school" job.
You need your BA, TEFL certification and/or 1 year of experience (if you don't have a TEFL course (100+ hours with 20+ hours "in class")).

You will very rarely see ads for 6 month jobs. With government position (PS, university, etc.) they're like Bigfoot and UFOs, we've all heard about them from a friend of a friend but no one has ever seen one himself.
If you're willing to broaden your search to private language schools, then you might be able to negotiate a 6 month contract. In that case you simply apply to the regular 1 year jobs and then try to negotiate a 6 month contract. Keep in mind that part of negotiating means that you'll have to give up something to get that short contract. It's unlikely that you'll get a flight to Korea. At best you'll get reimbursed for a 1-way ticket when you finish your contract. You won't get severance pay. You might not get vacation days. If you're willing to find your own accommodations then that will also be attractive to employers. Basically, you have to make it worth their while. That includes anything that makes it cheaper, or less risky for them. If they don't have to invest in you coming over (flight, rent, etc.) then it might be worth it for them. |
