just make sure if you ever get asked that question, you answer "NO" cuz I think it's not allowed to have two driver's licenses.

I wonder why they wouldn't want to person having two license? Considering it's in a different country...

It’s an international agreement between countries.

I don’t know the reason.

Say you violate the traffic laws of one country and they take away your license. If you had another one you could still drive with that in said country which is not so cool I suppose.

I got a US license (not exchange but from scratch) when I already had a license from another country. I thought if I let them know that I can drive than the process will be easier and faster. Well it wasn’t and I was told that once I’m done they will punch a hole on my original license and with that essentially destroy it. In the end they just put a stamp on the plastic card that it isn’t valid … which I simply wiped off as I walked away.
So it’s not just Korea or Canada, it goes like this in most countries.

It takes about 20 minutes, a photo and and 7k won to get your IDP.

fill in the form.
Show your license, ARC and passport.
Pay the fee.
Wait 20 minutes while they print it off.
good for one year.

It is cheaper to get your license exchanged at an actual DL center instead of the global center. All of the DL centers have their eye exams on site. It's only 5k, at the gangnam one near samsung station it's just down the stairs from the license exchange counter. There is no deep knee test for Canadians.

Passport, ARC, application form, photo, fee, 20 minutes at the D/L center.
Done and out the door. Good for another decade.
