| WT, let's face it there are never going to be reliable stats about this. However I do think it's very unlikely that 85% of the world's population of adult males have never visited a prostitute. Most of the countries I've lived in see it as a right of passage. Everyone I know in TEFL in this part of the world, with one or two exceptions, have paid for it at some stage. Why not start one of your famous polls and see how Dave's posters answer? |

There will never be reliable stats so just disregard all of them?
Look at this:
http://prostitution.procon.org/sourcefiles/mens-practices-in-prostitution-and-their-implications-for-social-work.pdf
Separate studies at separate times in different countries came up with similar numbers.
For example, a study of Brits showed 7% of men had paid for sex at least once in their life. A later study showed 8.8%. Those numbers are not that different from each other (and one can can conclude the rate is going up slightly).
About your anecdote of whoremongering TEFL teachers: maybe teaching English overseas tends to attract a certain type of person, or maybe it is just the subset you know/hang out with, or maybe it is another reason. But overall in the world, most men do not go to prostitutes, and I stand by that statement. |

That's an old, discredited study (from 1948). Got anything more recent?
Academic criticisms were made pertaining to sample selection and sample bias in the reports' methodology. Two main problems cited were that significant portions of the samples come from prison populations and male prostitutes, and that people who volunteer to be interviewed about taboo subject are likely to suffer from the problem of self-selection. Both undermine the usefulness of the sample in terms of determining the tendencies of the overall population. In 1948, the same year as the original publication, a committee of the American Statistical Association, including notable statisticians such as John Tukey, condemned the sampling procedure. Tukey was perhaps the most vocal critic, saying, "A random selection of three people would have been better than a group of 300 chosen by Mr. Kinsey." |

| Wow, it looks like that guy has a history of being scammed. I found this page on his website. He posted all the pictures of people who scammed him in Russia- one person was even his fiancee. |

Never been with a prostitute in my life. Hopefully I never will. The whole "sex tourism" thing is a bit pathetic and very morally questionable. "Where are you going for vacation this year Dave?...Back to the Phillippines again? Haven't you been there like eight times already? Aren't there other places you'd like to visit. No?" It's all a bit sad.
Is it so hard to find a girlfriend? Sex tourism is for losers. |
Generally the big people who are into are (a.) retired business people who has/had a job where having a relationship is impossible or (b.) people who want no strings-attached sex |

| I'm guessing western men and not asian men in those stats. I'm guessing a whole more than 15% of the population in this part of the world go to hookers. |
