I went to the beach and saw a surfing contest here on Jeju. There were about 50 surfers in the water. Most of whom wern't competing but it was nice. Beach tents were set up, surfing sponsors were there and the music was alright too.
It's getting more popular here all the time.

Is it possible to surf in Jeju? (serious question)
Every time i've been there I have seen no wave bigger than about 10cm.
Reminds of the time that I was lucky enough (unlucky?) to witness the 'surf' competition in Busan 5-6 years ago. 20~ guys went on boards and just sat in the water for roughly an hour, no waves came, i guess they said F* it and came back in for beers. |

Re: your serious question the answer is yes on a sandy beach. Jung Moon beach is the one most often used. Most beach areas in Jeju are sharp volcanic rock and you'd have to be on a death wish to ride waves there. There was a surfer who died at Jung Moon a year or 2 ago. They don't get the Hawaiian or Californian rollers but they do get waves there.
5 years ago it was almost unheard of, but each year more and more people are getting into it.
Come to think of it I'm sure some lunatic will be at the beach during the next typhoon waiting for the big one. I think Stan will go drink beer there and watch the show. |

Over the past few years: coffee shops. Endless coffee shops. There was one really popular one that opened about five years ago, and then EVERYONE followed suit. As a result none of them are particularly prospering. |

In the 'culture area' of my city, there is an arts festival. A couple of the salsa clubs moved their tables out into the streets and were doing some dancing. There were also a lot of Spanish people dressed as wrestlers and in traditional costumes dancing - right across from the micro brewery. It was asthetically pleasing because the street is holding a lot of sculptures at the moment.
Which was nice... |

There is a place called HollyBeer. Dumb name but it looks like they serve foreign bottles so it'll make a nice change around Edae/Daeheung. |

Beaches....
I have seen some fabulous photos of some beaches on Geoje Island.
I have not been there myself (not yet) but it would be worth looking into. Even if there may not surfing opportunities, camping and BBQ on the beach may be a good substitute. |

Geoje has opportunities to camp and barbecue on the beach. I like Geoje. It's got some really nice things about it. |

..care to share any locations?
I am all about campfires (perhaps not in the summer, though), meat burning on a grill, a fishing pole and a pop-up tent. |

Sorry I was taken there by friends and don't remember the name. But it was a lot of fun. Stan will call a friend tomorrow and ask. |

I've been in my neighborhood a little over a year and have seen between 10-20 older 2 story residential buildings get torn down and replaced with higher density 4-7 story buildings.
Not much else aside from the regular parade of restaurants going out of business and others moving in to end up doing the same. |
