After the U.S Patent Office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board canceled trademarks for the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., took to the Senate floor to celebrate.

For the 27 tribes in Nevada, “Every time they hear this name is a sad reminder of a long tradition of racism and bigotry,” said Reid, long a supporter of efforts to change the team name.

With the trademark ruling, he said, “The writing is on the wall. And it’s on the wall in giant blinking neon lights. The name will change and justice will be done.”

All the ruling means now is that anyone can make money off of the team name. Their trademark is no longer protected from infringement.

I've already heard that Synder is planning to change their name to the "Deadskins" out of rebellion. Can you imagine what the mascot would look like?

Not really:

Quote:
The decision by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, part of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, is unlikely to have an immediate financial impact while the team appeals the ruling. Even if the decision is not overturned, the Redskins can use the name and enforce its trademarks using common-law rights.

Bold is mine.

My high school's nickname was the Black Devils, and we had the creepiest-looking logo of a devil on our football helmets you could possibly imagine. It was 100 times more badass than the Oakland Raiders' helmets.

I was in high school in the early '90s and teenage pregnancy and fights were already rampant. Over half my graduating class were either parents or had a kid on the way. Fights happened almost daily, and my math instructor's jaw was wired shut from being struck while she was trying to break up a fight. After I graduated, drug use at the high school became rampant and murders started happening too.

Instead of blaming themselves for lousy parenting, the parents did what lousy parents do. They shifted the blame instead of shouldering it. In this case, the Black Devils nickname and logo were accused of inspiring the kids to do evil. This was in the Bible Belt, after all. The parents campaigned to "get Satan out of the school."

The kids in the high school in the late '90s got to vote on the new nickname, since the Devils nickname and logo were permanently banned. Panthers ended up winning, but many of the kids who were bitter about the name change voted for Pink Butterflies and it barely lost. It would've been hilarious if it would've won. If I had still been in school, I would've definitely voted for Pink Butterflies. Laughing

Predictably, juvenile delinquency and teenage pregnancy continued to become more common in my hometown.

The solution is easy. Just threaten them with the name "Washington Blackskins" and they'll lower their weapons.

I hate the pressure from special interest groups that claim outrage. I'd like them to keep their name.

You are on to something. After all the population of Washington DC is mostly black. But I would go with the DC raccoons and all that implies. They can have a cute little furry raccoon mascot.

I think the decision is abominable. No justification for this move by the patent office.

That being said, the name, along with the Chief Wahoo mascot of the Cleveland Indians should go. No one uses 'Redskins' in polite and civilized conversation to American Indians. If you did so, you would be looked as bigoted and uncouth. This is not the same as Vikings or Seminoles or Chiefs. And as the recent TV ad pointed out , it is a word they do not use to describe themselves, unlike other ethnic slurs which may be appropriated.

I meant if the NFL was a league that was going to be created this year, or even in 1980 and someone proposed the name "Redskins", you'd get a bunch of bewildered glances. Chiefs or Fighting Sioux or Braves, might be fine, but "Redskins'?

And the Cleveland Indians logo is REALLY bad too. Similar reason- If you drew that today, you'd be seen as a bigot.

I don't think they should remove historical references to those things, so as to preserve tradition, but moving on into the future, yeah change the name.
