The cost of a TEFL certification can vary greatly, just do an internet search. For a first time teacher at a hagwon, it's unlikely TEFL will increase your salary, as they'll just look for the next teacher who will accept a lower salary. For a public school job, 120hr TEFL with 20 hours in class (it can't be just 120 hrs online) is a job requirement.
Some schools recruit directly to save on recruiter fees. This saving is not passed on to the teacher, the salary will generally be the same. It's unlikely you're going to get more than 2.1 with housing and airfare. My school now advertises directly on Craigslist Seoul Education. Have you tried looking there?
A recruiter may stop working with you if you say yes to a job and then change your mind at the last minute. There are dozens of recruiters, so don't worry about that.
Most contracts are 12 months, which is what you need to complete to get your severance pay and airfare home (if that's included). Worrying about quitting/ getting fired before you even have a job yet is jumping the gun a bit, and probably not a good sign. |
One way air fare is only the norm if you're stupid enough to accept that. Don't accept it and then they won't offer it. Point is many are still offering both ways. Sit on your parents couch and take time to sift through the offers. Wait for the right offer and then proceed. Don't underestimate how much of your "savings" that will take to buy that flight home. Life here is more expensive than before and salaries have not kept up with that. If you don't want to stay home being frugal or only drinking awful cheap Korean beer, you won't save as much as you do. But if you are lucky enough to save 8 or 9 grand, take 2 grand away from that for the flight home. Some folks save more, some save less. It depends on your habits. Point is, don't take the first offer that comes along. There are still good deals out there. |
