So, my school accepted us quite a while ago. Their policy is reimbursement within 15 days. I have no problem with that, but I'd like to buy our tickets, as they get more expensive as you wait. Has anyone ever arrived in Korea a little before the date your E-2 visa is in effect? Any potential problems with this?
Thanks[/img] |

Firstly, what do you call "quite a while ago" and why hasn't the school gotten you a visa in the meantime?
Secondly, I know people who have arrived in Korea and taught, illegally, on a tourist visa before doing a visa run to Japan. It's risky in the sense that if you get caught, you're out of Korea on your arse with an enormous fine. It's not common but it DOES happen.
If you take the risk, make sure your school pays for the visa run and pays your salary while you're away. Agree this BEFORE you book any flights to Korea. Make it a dealbreaker - you're risking your neck for them, they can pay all the costs associated. Personally, I'd tell the school to get a visa before I fly - sounds like they've had long enough to get their arses into gear and I wouldn't put myself at risk over their incompetence. |

What do you mean by "before the date your E-2 visa is in effect"? The visa is valid as soon as you get it. As soon as you get it stuck in your passport then you are good to go. You can enter Korea on it. You can apply for an ARC. Your job might not start until later but you will legally be in Korea on that E2 visa.
Or do you mean that you want to enter as a tourist (no visa stamped in your passport) and then go to Japan to pick up the visa? That's possible and totally legal. You'll almost certainly need proof of onward travel before the airline will let you board the plane. (But that's a simple and cheap problem to resolve.) BUT, if the school cancels the contract before you get the visa then you'll be out of luck. If you come before you get a visa, then make sure that the school pays for your flight. Otherwise they have no incentive to keep you. They can toss you aside in favor of a "better" applicant and there will be little or nothing that you can do about it. |

You should have your visa in your passport when you arrive in Korea.
This seems vague to me, and very fishy. I would do more research on the school/recruiter. |

Never pay for you ticket up front. What if the school cancels you at the last minute? Then you are stuck with the plane ticket and no job. This isn't like back home where there are laws to fall back on in case something like that happened. You would be up the creek without a paddle. |
