This kind of stuff happens far too regularly here. It's just been a few months since the "This is Africa' cigarette package caused an outcry for depicting Africans as monkeys. It all reminds of their driving style - you call them out on their obnoxious driving, or almost running you over, and they do the 'sorry, sorry' thing but change nothing. They'll do the exact same thing twenty meters down the road. Same with any apology that might be given for this latest black face nonsense. It will change nothing.

Its not only Koreans that are doing it.
A well known writer , Ill just call him 'rager', who writes a blog about hiking in Korea and who has published a book about it, recently published a short article where he referred to the Japanese as 'Simian like'.
He has obviously spent so much time with Koreans, that their funny little quirks have been rubbing off onto him. When I challenged him about it, he didnt seem to think there was anything wrong with his statement.
It seems will-full ignorance is also contagious. |
A guy posts a blog calling the Japanese Simian like and you have a problem with it?
But the Klownisms blog you're ok with? |
well, theres a slight difference between saying something is willingly messed up (ie a country) and calling an entire race 'gorillas' because of their looks, dont you think?
Besides, one of the main reasons I dislike Koreans is that kind of childish, prejudice and name calling - so 'yes' would be the answer to that question.
I openly dislike koreans as a rule, and i certainly dont try to hide it from anyone. I have many reasons for this. That being said however, their faces, bodies, hair colour, skin colour, eye shape, smell, language or even their fashion styles are not something I would purposefully pick fault with. |
I wouldn't know because you didn't post the blog. Just that he or she wrote simian like, I assumed the writer was referring to some Japanese people's behavior.
To sum it up, one of the big reasons you dislike Koreans is because of their childish, prejudice, and name calling, but the name calling and prejudice on Klownisms you don't have a problem with. I guess that makes sense. |

Some of you really like to put Korea on a pedestal. Feigning outrage on the internet because something happened in Korea. |

Yes, I most certainly feel overcome with respect for the 5000 years of culture and refinement that have given us Kpoop and Hellyu.

While I agree that this is wrong, its ridiculous to blame Koreans for "not getting it", as though they are some exception to the rule.

And they don't have the history with race relations and blackface that we do. |
Yeah, in america people blah blah blah |

How exactly am I cherry picking but the OP is not?
Anyways, as for the Africa cigarettes, clearly they were targeting African people as nothing says Native African like a Sherlock Holmes hat and magnifying glass. [/quote] |

I remember 2 years ago when a ton of Koreans threw a huge fit when a server at Starbucks labeled their cups with two slanty eyes.
Funny how they throw a fit over some teenager working at a Starbucks but don't see the problem with a state run TV station doing this....again. |
I know what you mean. I've seen whites males portrayed as sexual predators several times on national television in Korea. But a white girl who complains on YouTube that Asians are noisy in the library receives death threats and is forced to resign from UCLA. A lot of the things that minority groups get outraged about back home seem minor in comparison to what I've witnessed in Korea. |

how about a picture of africa? or a lion? or the word africa.
Most of the successful brands dont have stupid, racist pictures on them - or any pictures for that matter... |

Let's just all agree that everyone everywhere is terrible, except for me and you (and I'm not so sure about you). |

Just watched the video. It made me cringe. The first depiction was bad enough, but the second character that appears around the 2:20 mark is even worse. Do these people not have voices in their heads that say "hold on, maybe we should reconsider this"? Hopefully this will all blow up during the winter olympics and show the world the real face of Korea. But, in good Korean style, the CEO's will probably make sure none of this airs when foreign visitors can witness it, or the foreign press can get wind of it, then just go back to normal after everyone has gone home. |

It happens here A LOT though and imo far too much for a country that is trying to become more globalized. It happens in our own countries every now and then but there are big consequences. In Korea, it seems to be much more acceptable and no-one seems to care enough to do anything about it.
It's not difficult to have a research team who consult foreigners on certain words/imagery (whether for accuracy or to make sure it's not a big 'no no') etc they simply don't care to. |

I also hate the skits where they are making fun of overweight people. They always have the overweight comedian try to pick up a guy or girl just to have them constantly rejected because of their weight. They even portray them as stupid an unable to date anyone because they don't have a S line or V line. Then they bring in the super skinny comedian to show that this is what you should look like to date someone. |

I don't know where you're from, but "racial insensitivity" is a daily headline in the States these days. I doubt you can back up your claim of here it happens a lot and back home it only happens every now and then. Besides, if it happens too much for Korea, a country trying to become globalized, but it happens every now and then in a country that's been globalized for decades, what's that say about that country?
It's accepted here because in Asia they don't have the western notion of being hyper sensitive to everyone's feelings. |

Key thing to remember when leaving the US/Canada. Even western Europe can be bad if you aren't white. But of course, most posters being white would not notice. |
