Deposits were unheard of when I came to Korea. You can thank a few of your predecessors for leaving unpaid bills, damages, etc, for the initiation of this contract condition. Once set, it sticks.

Its a reactive thing. Hagwons & public school programs that have so far gone unburnt generally dont ask for deposits.

I wonder why they are saying that it's illegal for them to take it out of my salary, and that I have to send it to their bank account.
At the last public school I was at they took it out.

Because it's illegal to do so. They can't garnish your wages like that. I would suggest just not giving it to them and giving the labour board a call and see what they say.

Only GEPIK does this. The rest of EPIK doesn't do this. Pick your poison.

In relation to this, if you leave your position earlier and hand in your notice they have to refund this deposit back to you, right??

As long as is its in the contract, you should get it back, or be able to contest to get it back, no?
