In the airport getting tickets for trip, when i realised i had never registered new passport. rang immi to make sure that i could come back into the country. She said i could travel but would have to pay a fine.

Anyone ever have to do this before? Will I have to deal with this in the airport or will i get thru and go to immi office? Anyone know how much the fine is for a couple of months?

Standard fine is 100,000/day for general immigration violations. They will tend to modify that depending on their whims, and might just charge you a few hundred. Depends what kind of mood they are in. Expect anywhere from 100k-6 million for a 2 month violation.

Are you in the airport NOW buying last minute tickets that you're going to use the same day? With a few exceptions, you will almost always pay more (a LOT more) if you buy them at the airport just before departure.

If you aren't about to depart and your back in the city then update your records at immigration. If you WERE at the airport about to leave then I would guess that you've already done so. Let us know how it went.

Nothing written down, but they can charge you more if they want. They seem to have some kind of unofficial limit depending on the violation, but if they decide they don't like you, they could make your life difficult.

mmm hopefully they let me off with a small fine. it was a genuine mistake. Will i have to deal with this in the airport upon re-entry?

You'll usually only deal with it once, on the way out. They didn't make you pay the fine then? Usually they do it then.
because if you leave and don't come back, they can't levy the fine.

strange. You might have gotten away with it, you'll know when you come back through, or you might get some kind of violation notice later.

Did you show your ARC going in or out?

Did the immigration person at the airport say anything to you at all like "Did you get a new passport" or something like that?

Your passport number is connected to your ARC, and if you changed your number while you were in here, they would not have your passport connected to your ARC. if you didn't show your ARC going out, it gets very confusing. Technically on your passport, they have no record of you entering the country, and I"m not sure if the relationship to your old passport is brought up when they scan or not (that's why you have to inform immigration of changes).

It's a bit confusing as to exactly what your status is, but if I were you I'd just make sure to give your ARC and passport together when you come back, and if there is an issue they'll tell you then. If they say nothing, go to immigration as soon as you get back to update your passport number, at that time they may assess a fine.

A guy on another forum (or possibly on this forum) had the same experience, where he left and came back (multiple times, I believe, as he didn't even know he needed to register his passport) without anyone ever saying anything. He later registered it, I guess, and no one said a word.

I was late registering my new one as well and just faxed in a form and never heard anything more. Of course, I haven't been to immigration since, so I may be paying a fine or learning about some red mark on my file the next I go. I've read elsewhere, though, that they usually waive the fine for this particular offense, so I wouldn't stress out about it too much.

I did show my ARC when I left. The guy never said anything. Noone did. I called the helpline because I remembered.
