I've seen it happen before to friends. Normally when you come back into Korea they will hold you up for half an hour, but in the end let you go without any fine. You're actually suppose to notify immigration of any passport change within two weeks of the change. Even with HiKorea you only have two weeks to upload a scan of your new passport, after that it won't accept it and you have to go to immigration. I wouldn’t worry about it probably nothing serious will happen to you. |

I got a new passport about a week before going on vacation and didn't register it until I got back. No one said a word to me going out or coming back. I even went to get that automatic entry stamp at the airport before leaving. The lady said I would have to register this passport first and then didn't mention anything else. |

Immigration goes by the Issue Date in your passport.
A few years ago I was late registering my new passport by a few weeks. Not my fault though, because the canadian embassy Put the issue date of the Day i visited the embassy in the passport however i didnt receive the passport until 3 or 4 weeks AFTER i applied for it. So according to K immi I was 2 weeks late to register the passport....
They were pretty pissed off. SAid they should give me a fine but ended up just giving me a stern look and told me not to do it again. They can apparently put a black mark on your file too.
MEH..
good luck at K immigration. hopefully you dont get a fine.
i hear they Can be up to 100k won a day. |

I was worried about the same thing as you Giraffe. I received a new Canadian passport this month and they put the issue date as July 8th but I never received it until the 30th of July. I promptly went to the immigration office that day (I trashed the official pick up paper at the embassy without a thought) and while I was waiting looked at the issue date and felt the bottom fall out of my stomach. The immi office didn't bat an eye and promptly registered my new number without saying a thing. |

Recently had a similar experience with my U.S. passport. Applied for renewal on July 14th and received my new passport on the 28th. Issue date was the 15th.
I called about faxing in the updated information on the 30th thinking that it had only been two days since receiving my passport and was informed that the 14 days since issue had passed and I'd have to visit immigration in person to update the information.
Made it down to immigration with receipts for my application and pick up. The guy at the information desk said it may be a problem. When I showed him the documentation he said that was an issue for me to work out with my embassy and that Korean immigration simply goes by the issued date.
However upon reaching the window, the officer didn't bat an eye. Couple keystrokes and I was all set no questions asked.
