The owner of JR Pub is not Korean. It looks like some people recently posted some nasty comments on the bar's facebook page. I wonder if he's going to regret his decision.

Guy looks like the son of the one Western fellow who was taking care of the floor for a while back when the bar first opened. Although I've never seen this guy, and that photo is at the BBQ joint around the corner.

Over on reddit it appears the sign has been removed and replaced with an apology note. I stopped going there a while ago (because it's always so packed, I get on fine with the staff) so I can't really bang on about boycotting the place. I don't think they are racist, it seems like it was some sort of knee-jerk reaction. One would think that they would be aware of outright announcements like this not going over well based on past incidents at other bars, but who knows, maybe they were genuinely oblivious. It looks like they got chided quite heavily considering the rapid turnover of the signage.

Haven't a clue. Like I said, I was already pretty buzzed and first thing I did was head straight to the toilet, and next to the dart boards to claim one. All I could tell was that there were both foreigners and Koreans there. It was my first time there. Normally I go to Wolfhound to because they have like real darts, but I didn't want to bother with the math, so soft-tip.

Think there might have been some middle-easterners/Africans playing at the pool table, but its really all a blur. Except for their crappy pizza. I remember that.

But yeah, I don't think word of this policy has circulated much. Either that or the sign was taken down. Either way I'm figuring half the people there just did what I did and walked in without even bothering to look at all the signs and crap.

In retrospect it seems I have no information to add at all. Like that eyewitness who saw everything but absolutely nothing. "Uh yeah, dude was like between 5'8" and 6'2" and like somewhere between 20 and 35. Got in this white four door car. Think it was a Camry. Maybe an Altima. One of those. But it was white. Or like, light light blue. I dunno, officer I was really wasted".

It's to do with the free trade agreement. Some Africans want to give it to Korea, but Korea doesn’t want it.

It should die down soon.

Steve Herman has a photo of the apology letter posted in response to the Ebola ban on his twitter feed.

It's weird how there's only one picture of the sign going around. You'd think with everyone having smartphones these days and a foreigner heavy area like Itaewon, more than one person would have seen it and snapped a pic. Maybe it got taken down right away.

"It was reported to Asia Pundits that a manager at the pub, who goes by the name Hannah Yoon, was contacted and confirmed the bar’s new policy, stating, 'Koreans were uncomfortable', adding that the bar needed to cater to their main patrons. Miss Yoon also stated that the bar’s owners were aware of the policy change....

"Owner Troy Armado stated, 'I didn’t even know about this. I’m at the BBQ restaurant now. (He’s not overseeing the pub). I just hosted the Gabon ambassador last night at the BBQ. 50 people from Gabon reserved the roof yesterday. I will talk to whoever put up this sign. I will clear everything up today.' "

So the Korean manager says the owners were aware of the new policy, but the foreign owner claims ignorance.

It's a bar. Like I said, people don't stop at a bar entrance to read every sign, ponder it, and proceed to enter for a game of cribbage and a discussion on Proust. I never noticed any signs. I mean I noticed there were signs but rather than stop to read them I stumbled in to take a whiz and then went straight to the bar to get some drinks.

Wait, is all this fuss because people from Africa have ebola, and Koreans don't want to have ebola, so they don't want Africans coming here?

Because that seems rational.

"'I will give a 50 percent discount on all drinks and food to those coming to the bar on Thursday night,' the JR Pub owner said Monday. He also noted that all proceeds of the night will go to a charity and those who are in need of help.

"'It all happened because of my ignorance. It’s entirely my fault and I’m the one who deserves death,' Jung Jin-chul, owner of JR Pub, said Tuesday as he recalled his racist decision last Saturday."
