Just drove to school this morning in the rain. For about 10 minutes I was tail gating this teal suv in front of me because he was driving slow and I couldn't pass as the other lane had trucks (I tried a few times but the lane was blocked). I was literally a couple feet away from his rear bumper, we were going anywhere from 100 to 120 km/h in an 80 zone and then finally I had my chance to pass him and I did. Now he was behind me, but then I had this strange feeling. As we got off the highway, we pulled into the local roads and into our school parking lot and he was still behind me!

Dang. At that moment I knew he was one my co-teachers LOL.
I was embarrassed to get out of my car and look him in the eye.

To make matters worse, we had to spend the next 30 minutes together moving school furniture as we were called to help the caretaker.

But everything is cool now, maybe he didn't notice I was tailing him so close. Maybe he has just let it go and means nothing to him. Hopefully.

I'll have to remember which cars belong to my teachers so that I avoid doing that to them.

Or, here's another option. Why not refrain from tailgating altogether, especially in the rain?

And this is why this situation has never happened to me, I don't drive like an idiot.

Tailgating (in America that means having a BBQ at your car before a football game) or riding someone's bumper is just an absolutely reckless thing to do. You cannot and will not react in time if there is some sort of sudden problem. It also drastically reduces your field of vision. To do this in the rain and at high speeds is just asking for trouble.

Learn how to drive- steady and defensively. Go the speed limit. Smooth is better than fast. Learn how to cruise and chill. Put on some relaxing music and give plenty of space. Don't be a slowpoke, but don't be some leadfoot. Keep your eyes open and find that groove where you are calm, but focused.

You were doing 100-120 in an 80 zone and tailgating because he was 'going slow'? And then you passed him, presumably so you could drive faster, all in the rain?

Oatmeal, FFS, you are BEGGING to become a statistic. Get your head out of your ass.

LOL. This from a guy to habitually jumps to the defense of Korean drivers anytime someone suggests they drive recklessly and dangerously. One rule for Koreans, and another for the rest of us, I suppose.

I like the wholly unnecessary reminder about the American meaning of "tailgate party" - despite the expression used in this thread being a verb, and notably lacking "party."

And then needlessly "corrects" it.

I have not heard the term "tailgate party" in a very long time. The more common usage these days is as a verb or gerund: "We will tailgate before the game" or " Tailgating is very popular before college football games"

Except on the other threads I have regularly talked about how bad drivers are here.

I have taken exception to those who suggest umbrella whacks and flinging coins are the proper response to such things.

Anyways, I'm not talking to Korean drivers in these threads. I'm talking to you. If I was on a thread with Korean drivers I might point out certain unsafe practices.

But in other threads when things are being discussed that happen in Korea, you certainly like to jump in and point out how it is in other countries.

You are practicing a double standard. The game is up, pal. Laughing

Yeah, but still, folks should listen to his advice. I mean, his former college roommate's stepfather once dated a woman who went on to marry some dude who entered a demolition derby back in 1986, so I'm pretty sure Steelrails knows what he's talking about.

I'm not talking about "Koreans" or "Americans" here. There's a difference between giving personal advice and talking about things on a social or policy level.

Same with my oft-cited beer'n'drive comment. That was a bit of personal advice for someone who was stressed. Saying, go for a drive on an empty road, put on a tune, and crack a beer. That wasn't a policy or a comparison of social phenomenon.

And a single beer while driving is not even enough to put you above the legal limit or impair your driving any more than a Red Bull or eating a burger and driving. You know the consequences if you get caught.

Must every bloody thread turn into Steelrails vs the trolls? No wonder I haven't been on this site in months and haven't missed it in the least.
