Pedestrians will do the same- hurriedly move in front of you even if they no space to move into. Where you gonna go?

But one thing I'm very curious of is the cultural cause of just not have any spacial awareness whatsoever. Like most people here just do not pay attention to what is going around them and it's almost like they are walking around aimlessly.

I talked about it with other Koreans one day, and it might be a mentality of thinking that other people will take care of your problems for you. So if you are driving or walking, and you are headed straight into someone, it's their responnsibilty to move out of the way, even if they also might not be aware of your presence.

I agree with you. The absurdity of it is this: Don't they realize that others think the same way they do and that everybody is walking or driving around expecting the exact same thing?

What is also incredibly dangerous is that drivers will not only park on double yellow lines but also walk around to the drivers side to get back into their car.

They're suddenly walking out into the middle of the road and opening their car door.

How else would they get in to their car? Through the passenger side?

Are you just looking for stupid stuff to argue about?

Good point. Did he have a sunroof? That would have been a good chance to hone his mountain climbing skills.

I was walking along an alley yesterday when a guy swung wide to make the turn coming up and almost pushed me into the wall next to the road. I extended my arm to say here I am and so he stopped and rolled his blacked out window down about two inches.

Since he seemed to want to converse, I told him he ought to look where he's going. He just drove away, made the turn and then once out of sight stopped to yell out "This is Korea!" I clarified his statement a bit in my response. Very Happy

Why not, if it is much safer to do so?

They've already broken the law by parking on double yellows, their vehicle is blocking the entire right lane that should be for moving traffic, while they decide to swing their door out another metre into the path of oncoming traffic- including bicycles- without even looking first. And you're suggesting what they're doing is ok Rolling Eyes

lol I've had that.

They usually say that when they are completely in the wrong and have just committed something indefensible.

of course if a foreigner was to commit the same offences it'd make the national news.

Meh, I doubt the number of accidents caused by a driver parked on the road and opening his door is very high. I'm assuming you know the statistics since you're so adamant about it causing accidents, right?

You sound really dumb if you think a foreigner driving a car turned wide and almost hit someone would make national news.

Entering the drivers side is neither legal nor safe if you have already parked on double yellows, you idiot.

lol spend a minute to figure it out before you press "submit". Laughing

I'll split the difference and agree that it is incredibly dangerous to do that, but the cabbies here at least seem to make a big deal about it. Not too sure about everyday drivers though.

Is that a real Chinese proverb? Crap! That makes so much sense. It's funny how so many are in their own world here and never seem to mind their surroundings or think of other people.

if true, that is mindblowing and explains why cars are often pulling out right in front of me completely oblivious to anything oncoming.

Why do they even bother to put mirrors on their cars?

Not sure about cars but according to this, Korea had 12000 bicycle-related accidnets between 2009 & 2012.

http://klawguru.com/2014/04/13/bicycle-law-in-korea/

The same site also says that bicycles are only "obligated" (not legally bound?) to carry safety lights.

Which explains why most cyclists i see do not have cycle lights, even at night.

Often I see cyclists riding on the wrong side of the road, into oncoming traffic, without lights, after dark! The absent-mindedness is just....surreal.

One of the cool really things about Korea is the lawlessness, it keeps the place exciting and dynamic. The cycle path along the Han river is hugely enlivened by random grannies and young kids running across the path, ajeoshis swerving erratically on their bikes. The roads are a joyous chaos of law breaking excitement and Koreans are such adept drivers that they can text message, watch TV and shout at their kids all at the same time! Korean children don't need to wear seat belts as they are tougher and more resilient than western children.

Shopping in the supermarket is made much more entertaining when you get to smash other people's shopping carts out the way. It is also fun to run the cart into the heels of other shoppers when they're in front.

Cycling is fun, and it is cathartic to practice shouting at people in Korean 'Get the *bleep* out the way you retard! Comin' thru!' My in depth knowledge and fluency swearing in Korean is largely down to paying attention to how other vehicle users greet each other whilst getting from a to B.

Spitting is also cool, Koreans with their penchant for decorating their surroundings with mucus and bile are trying their hardest to be the first country to have homegrown cases of Ebola. The drive and the energy of Koreans knows no bounds.

Some ignorant people think the littering here in Seoul is a bit out of hand, and Koreans are not concerned about their environment. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is not 'litter' it is decoration. Without mounds of decomposing waste and litter to liven the place up Seoul would be grey and lifeless. What else would the stray cats and pigeons eat if it wasn't for all the pavement banchan and cigarette filters? The piles of fetid waste add a gritty and dynamic edge to the city.

The Korean people's habits are seen by some ignorant people as dangerous, inconsiderate, irresponsible, lawless and foolish but they're wrong. The sparkling habits of Koreans are without peers and nowhere is this more true than in the way that people drive and cycle.
