Posted: Fri Aug 15, 2014 2:53 pm Post subject: I got my CBC from a channeler. Now what? |
|
|
I posted this in my other thread, but I'm making the topic its own thread in hopes that myself, and a few other website, will be wrong...
I was told by a recruiter to use this company called Biometrics to get my FBI background check. I'd have it back in a week and I could start applying for jobs and life would be great. Or so I thought.
Biometrics is a channeler, I learned, and SK doesn't accept CBCs from said companies. It looks almost the same as a regular CBC, except it doesn't have the seal and it has an extra sentence that says "this CHS is not provided for the purpose of licensing or employment..."
Now, I'm hoping that
a) that sentence only applies in the US
b) and because it's apostilled, SK will acknowledge it as truthful/acceptable
OR
c) that they'll completely miss that sentence and the fact that it doesn't have a seal, and accept it
I'm getting mixed comments from websites. Some people have gotten away with it, but agencies and SK job forums state to forgo using channelers.
Should I send it all to SK and see what happens, or will it be a complete waste of money?

From your other post, you mentioned you rejected a proposal from the recruiter, they made accusations and threats, now you are hearing that they somehow misled you regarding the CBC. A lot going on, but if the process they use has been sufficient in the past it will likely be okay now UNLESS there is something immigration has changed very recently. You have to trust people to a certain level and when you find out you have been really wronged, then go to plan 'B'
I would send what you have or check it out in your home country at a Korean consulate, and they will know right away. Good luck. |

Of course, the Korean consulate! I've been in such a fit of nerves that it didn't even cross my mind to check with them.
Thank you. I didn't think they were directly trying to screw me over in that regard. I mainly thought they were simply highly misinformed.
If I don't visit the consulate next week, I will send my documents as they are. It doesn't hurt to give it a shot. |

You might do well just to apply for your visa from there rather than having to do things when you are abroad. It might save time in the long run. |

"this CHS is not provided for the purpose of licensing or employment..."
Mine said the same thing and was accepted. From what I remember, US CBC's prior to 2013 didn't say that but now they all do. |

Depends.
EPIK will NOT accept background checks from a channeler. You must get it directly from the FBI.
Not 100% sure about GEPIK, but if EPIK needs direct-from-FBI, I would wager than GEPIK is the same.
For private schools, it really depends on the school. And for hagwons, it depends on the hagwon. |

It's a hagwon.
I sent all the documents today, so I'll let you all know in a couple of weeks whether I'm going to SK in October, or delaying it for the time being. |

They received all my documents and the first thing my recruiter asked is, "where did you get your FBI check? It looks different." So I guess it's time I start thinking about what my plan b is.

Sorry to hear. The recruiter should not have referred you to a channeler.
Get fingerprints ASAP and then send them to the FBI. The website says the turnaround time is 30 working days, which would be about 6 weeks. Sending it for federal apostillation will be another 2 weeks. You'd be cutting it super close, but as long as your FBI check comes back ok, the hagwon may be ok with letting you start working while you wait for the apostillation. |

Thank you. I have an appointment to get them done via live scan on Tuesday (apparently it's faster..?), so we'll see.
That being said, someone from Gone2Korea got back to me. I told him about my issue with the CBC, and he said that if it's federally apostilled, it's acceptable. I don't even know at this point, but if this doesn't work, I may move back to Turkey. I like the idea of living in the southern part, so I guess it's not so bad. |

Congratulations! Everybody told me not to use a channeler because immigration does not accept background checks from them. I think you got lucky, my friend. Where are you headed? |

It's probably not the safe option (and I wouldn't recommend it), but a (horrible) recruiter told me to go through Accurate Biometrics, and thankfully it all worked out.
I'll be working in Mapo-gu, Seoul. |

OP, you did not just get lucky. Background checks from FBI approved channelers are accepted by Korean immigration and have been since near the end of 2013.
The FBI opened up their database to a list of approved channelers in 2013 and changed the format of the document issued for background checks by those channelers. I got this directly from the FBI help line after receiving my background check from an approved channeler last November. Recruiters questioned the authenticity of the document, but Korean immigration accepted it without issue. I also know of many people that have used channeler issued background checks in SK.
There is a lot of misinformation going around in Korea. This particular one about avoiding all channelers needs to die a quick and painful death. The FBI approved ones can be found on the FBI website. |
