Apparently a Canadian teacher got the crap beat out of him by a bunch of Koreans in Hongdae on Saturday night for no other reason that they thought he was American and they were exacting retribution for the stabbing. Apparently they whipped him with chains and such and he's in pretty bad shape.
Anyone else hear anything about that? |

I heard the Koreans hired martial artist Jackie Chan to come and beat some slacker Canadians with bamboo sticks in vengance of the attacks.... |

I think the guys involved must be either new to Korea or just went too wild one night. Thing is, I met plenty of American service personnel in Korea who were well-behaved and appreciated Korea far more than other foreigners who CHOSE to come to Korea.

so what americans had a fight with some drunken adosi who was probably provoking them in the first place!!!!
he got his arse kicked.. and then cries about it.. |
From all reports they flagged down a taxi driver (who presumably wasn't drunk) and then stomped on his car. I'm not sure how that constitutes asking for it.
I know a lot of my korean workmates who've been out and gotten into fights with other koreans. Some people get aggro when they drink- always have, always will. It's just a shame that it has to become part of something much bigger when you throw in the USA angle. Throw the fighters in jail and promise to enforce the curfew more strictly I say. |

I'll start this with a disclaimer. I am friendly with a few GIs and have enjoyed a drink and pleasant company with more than a few more. I find most of them to be decent, polite and interesting people. That being said, they are not usually the ones I run into in off-limits areas beyond curfew.
I'm begining to wonder if the MPs and the top brass of the USFK have an unwritten policy of turning a blind eye to curfew and off-limits violations. The incidences of such are so numerous that it beggars belief that there aren't paddy wagons full of GIs rounded up in Sinchon and Hongdae every weekend. If their superiors can't keep an eye on a few thousand of their own men, how the heck are they going to fight and defeat a million North Koreans. Something needs to be done, anyone got the number for the USFK commander?
Cheers

Its my understanding that alot of soldiers don't live on post. So its not like the MP's can go to every GI's house and make sure they're home after 1am. Or they might be on leave or whatever. |

Every single one of the "bad Americans" I've met here, has turned out to be an ESLer. I didnt realize class distinctions were still so common among the university educated- thought we were supposed to be "enlightened". |
