Hello,
I'm having a bit of trouble at the moment with finding a job. Having posted my CV and emailed a large number of recruiters (over 15 I imagine), I've had ony a handful of replies and no job offers, with currently not one recruiter replying to my mail.
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong - one year ago the same strategy had me talking to a good few recruiters and plenty of offers coming my way. Is this just a terrible time of the year?
FYI I'm young, have a year's experience, a vanilla degree and master's and all my documents ready. I'm applying for jobs in major cities.

| There are plenty of threads on this, the advice will always be the same - photo, age, being already in Korea, time of year etc. |

Most roles start around this point and school have for the most part already hired people for said roles. If you're looking for public roles in major cities it's going to be a hard task. Hagwons less so. But the overall market is smaller and supply is still steady.
A little more information might help.
* Are you applying from Korea?
*When you say young I'm guessing under 30, considering you have a masters and a years experience. Right?
* Did you state any other conditions when contacting recruiters? |

I wasnt really saying to do a search, more that its always the same reasons. Like the other poster said, now is a big intake and a lot of people are taking jobs from facebook recommendations or friends etc these days.
Recruiters dont hold the monopoly on jobs so much anymore. |

I would imagine that having enough time to troll internet boards full of losers at the bottom of the barrel would be more shameful. |

If you're not female, then most important is to have a nice photo and be American.
If you don't fit the above then you'll be put on the backburner. You'll probably hear back but it may take a few weeks. Better get ready to accept a less than ideal position. |

The new school semester just started last week, so this is a particularly bad time to be applying. Schools start to look for replacements a couple months in advance, so they will be looking again soon. Your biggest obstacle is that you are not in Korea right now.
Are you willing to pay for your own flight and interview in person?
I was frustrated with not getting any opportunities at a Seoul position a few years ago. I flew here from Vancouver on my own dime, and got a job in Gangnam on my 2nd day here. I was able to negotiate an extra 100,000 a month as well because they didn't need to fly me from overseas. You will have to do a visa run to Fukuoka which the school may or may not pay for, but it's pretty cheap. |

A few years ago, the recession was just beginning. Best not to do that now. You could be waiting a while. |

Thanks a lot for the replies. I've now started to get a slightly more positive response after changing a few bits and pieces (better photo, shorter resume, etc.).
I'm a little skeptical about their being a clear causal link between these changes and the warmer response but it's a welcome development.
FYI, if you're still interested I'm in my mid 20s and looking for hagwon positions. |

A few years ago, the recession was just beginning. Best not to do that now. You could be waiting a while. |
I see a lot of posts on craigslist and various facebook groups looking for someone in Korea ASAP. the chances of landing a job here increase significantly for someone that can interview in person. If you are only willing to get hired abroad, then you will most likely be "waiting a while" |

Hi there!
I am having the exact same issue. I must have applied for over 20 jobs/contacted 20 recruiters....possibly more!
I had an interview with a school manager and the feedback was that I was 'not lively enough' however this was just because I was trying to make sure he understood me (I am Scottish! - could this be a reason?)
Anyway, Im scared now that I wont hear anything again....really hoping to go away in the next few months. I don't have teaching experience.
Anything anyone could suggest?

Odds are heavily against you my friend. The game is up in Korea now and has been for some time.
For people that are not American, not female, not fair-haired, not experienced, not in possession of contacts on the ground in Korea, not under the age of 30,.... the best advice now is head to China. |
