I'm sure this has been asked before (quite possibly by myself), but how does one go about teaching online? My hours at my (generally) adult hagwon have been cut and I keep getting requests from my morning students for some way/how to continue their lessons at a more convenient time. I really want to teach them online.

I'm hoping/assuming that if they pay me via PayPal, then because I'll have to pay taxes on that in the US then it's legal. Technically, I'm not working in the ROK if I'm liable for taxes on that income back in the US.

Besides these local students, I distribute my lesson materials via a blog which gets about 800 hits from various parts of the world, Latvia, Uruguay, etc. This leads me to believe it might be time to hang out an ESL shingle in cyberspace anyway.

So, what are some suggestions for rates. I'm fairly certain that individual students at my current academy current pay between 8,000 to 13,000 per lesson depending on their contracted rate (i.e., discounts if they join the class for several months at the beginning or pay on a monthly basis).

My classes are general conversation/discussion style but I've got quite a bit of experience (9+ years) and as such 'know what I'm doing'. I'm especially good at coaching accurate pronunciation. I have iBT/TOEFL experience, a TEFL certification and solid references.

The price is about right, and the things you mentioned are doable. Shoot me a pm and I can send you more specific details about how to get going this route. It isn't altogether easy to set up, but once the system is in place it really depends on your own efforts to recruits students. Couple of routes you could go, some cheaper, some better, but none of the options is free.

Be careful working under this premise. As I understand it, Americans are liable to pay taxes on all sources of income, wherever it's made. The US is unique in this regard. And that doesn't have any bearing on whether you're 'working in the ROK'.

You may be entitled to apply the foreign income exclusion and/or the foreign tax credit which can reduce your owed US tax to 0 (for some they do, for others they don't) but the income still needs to be reported.

I definitely am working in the ROK (pay Korean tax) and definitely pay tax back home. It's the only reason I'd ever consider renouncing US citizenship.
