During the holiday? I don't think that would of happened.
I thought, surely, the manager would have checked the place before the guy moved out. At least, one day before hand (he moved out last Saturday).
Alright guys...thanks for the comments. I'll just go in there today and present her with the photos and the overall situation. My decision(s) will be based on her reaction.
I think we can end this here. But for the sake of anyone's possible curiosity, I'll post the outcome. |

Don't turn in a notice if you're going to quit over something that is entirely the fault of your boss. It sounds like she's a crook and is probably going to steal some of your pay anyway, but if you turn in a notice you're guaranteed to lose a very significant amount of your pay, especially if the school paid for your airfare to Korea. Just make the best of it until payday, look happy and don't complain, and then once you get paid, pull your midnight runner. Don't book your flight early. Schools like yours tend to pay a few days late. |

Nope. I was already here...no airfare, no recruiting fees, no housing deposits.
I am free and clear of any financial burdens. |

Nope. I was already here...no airfare, no recruiting fees, no housing deposits.

No longer an issue.
I talked with the manager and she was cool about it. I showed her the pictures and expressed my concerns. We went over the details of what was broke, damaged and missing.
Though, I did not go in there locked and loaded....polite, with a smile and just presented her the situation.
So...all is well that ends well. |

EZE ...you were right,in a way.
I turned in my 60 day notice over the matter (they tried to come and fix some things but the tool time guy looked as if he was giving excuses NOT to do what was asked, and the manager chose to ignore a couple small requests I made ...
(since I was a cheap hire...I had to fight for simple bus fair, work unpaid orientation and training, pay for my hotel for three nights before I moved in, and could not even get someone to puck me up at the bus station)
...by that time, It was all I could stand and the lessons in the book of Proverbs went right out the door.
So I presented my verbal and written 60 day notice, per the contract (which they are supposed to do as well) but they outright refused to honor that (I have that in video) and was shite-canned yesterday...but with a LOR.
EZE, my hat is off to you, in regards to your gift of foreshadow.
Thus, I conceed...lying recruiters, situations such as this, the entire mantra that is Korea....I simply am too old and too inflexible for this...and most likely, Asia.
You win Korea. |

^^^^ trueblue, I give you props for a)not accepting a crappy apartment, b)trying to work it out in a reasonable manner, and c) giving proper notice when those efforts failed. No one can really fault you on how you handled the situation.
But I would not give up on Korea just yet because of one bad situation, especially since you got the LOR. There are plenty of places that will treat you better. You may just luck out and find a school that needs a teacher asap(hopefully not because the last teacher fled in horror). Just saying... |

| TB dude, I've seen people in Korea with Kick-ass apartments that worked for good schools over the years. I wouldn't give up totally on the idea that you may just land a better gig next time. Getting screwed in the ROK is a matter of course for all the old salts, you hang in there and keep your chin up. If you give yourself a chance, and are willing to keep looking for a better gig, something always turns up. Good luck. |

I appreicate the support, guys. Trully, it is an uplifter.
It could have been worse...like, NOT receiving an LOR.
But, recruiters and schools are more picky. I am aware of scamming and dealings of recruiters and their dodgy contracts, so they generally stear clear of me when I send in an application.
Right now...roughly 800,000 won to my name, checked in a gositell in Songpa-gu...trying to pound the pavement, down herein Pyeoncheon. I can't find a single hogwan anywhere...(though,I have my cut off. If I can'tfind something within a week, I gotta go to Thailand or Cambodia. I can't afford to be stranded in Korea)
Anyway, again...thank you for the support. |

Have you made contact with other recruiters or using worknplay and other sites that schools use to find teachers independently? Limiting yourself to Pyeongchon will lessen your chances of finding something good. I have found jobs without recruiters before but I have never found a job in Korea simply by walking in and dropping a resume,

Yes, I've made contact with recruiters...they,most of them, are pieces of excrement. Worknplay is an option I have used but only for a direct hire.
Personally, I hope that schools wise up to the fact that recruiters here are a major source of agony for the EFL reputation in this country.
I never said I was limiting myself to Pyeongchon, I just came down to pound the pavement and see what was open...nadda.
I've heard mixed outcomes about finding a job on one's own..showing up, shirt and tie, resume and inquiring about the situation. |

congratulations for standing up to them yes, but that was incredibly dim of you to put in your notice without the financial means to support yourself - youre going to need to do a lot of begging and networking etc. if you want to stop this situation from going completely *beep* up...
I hope anyone else reading this thread (new faces to Korea) learn from what this guy just did - and don't act so rashly. |
