First, I am a korean and a girl and totally surprised by this behavior.

I have an African-American friend, who speaks Korean just as well as me. I begged him to go out on my birthday to a club, which honestly took a bit of begging. (He goes to a pretty good school in Korea and wanted to spend the time studying prior to classes...but eventually I got my way).

Well, we went to Octogan and I remember the first 10 minutes were pretty plan and clear. I ordered him a drink and he drank it (an over-the-board expensive shot...that even I didn't want to order cuz it was obviously a bs ploy to get us spending money). Anyways, literally two minutes after this drink the bartender asks him not to lean on the bar. He cordially simply moved up but even in my mind I was like hmm what the hell was that? Anyways, he points out to me, that two people down some foreign guy was vomiting in the little crappy water pool they have on the ground. I laugh but don't think much about it and tell him that I'm going to the restroom.

Five hours later and a great deal of searching inside, I get several messages (I had to charge my phone at a local store). What I find out is that 5 minutes into my restroom break, he is met with 3 security guards asking him to leave. He apparently asks them what's the problem and they say that they want to kick him out because of vomiting. (Please remember that this guy is like 100% fluent in Korean). He explains that he's not with the guys who vomited. Then they ask the bartender about him and she says oh I had to tell him not to lean on the bar. He politely goes outside and asks, yes, politely what is the problem with leaning on the bar if you accept that you were and don't lean on it. He gets no answer at all.

Apparently, the white guys who were with the vomiter see that he's been victimized because of them and do everything in their power to try to help the guy get back in. My friend tells them that he really doesn't want to go back in but would like to tell his friends the he is outside and more inclined in going home. The assholes at Octogan not only refuse to allow this but actually made him wait outside for 5 hours for absolutely no reason.

My personal view is that this place is 100% rude and seriously treated him in a racist way simply because of association. I'm not saying that shit doesn't happen. But I am saying that people and their establishments in Korea should be held responsible for their mistakes. This was horribly wrong and I would recommend that all foreigners refuse going to this place.

Right now, Koreans seem to have this notion that they don't have to live up to the standard of capitalism but can reap all of its fruits regardless of their behavior. This has to change NOW (and as people have seen with the foreign boycott of similar racist places it CAN actually make a difference...and SHOULD).

The OP should've not taken her friend to a Korean club.

Nothing in what you described seems racist.

Sounds pretty usual for bars/clubs. It could have been very bad service, it could be a drunk person's recollection - chances are, it's somewhere in the middle.

I can't imagine coming out of the bathroom and not finding my friend.. and just chilling for 5 more hours. Maybe I'm a different sort, but I'd go looking for my bud.

It took you five hours to realize a black guy wasn't in a bar full of Koreans? What took you so long?

To be fair that's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

What a bizarre story. He waited outside for you for 5 hours? Are either of you retarded? Why wouldn't there be cell phone contact? You are strange people.

Sorry I thought it was clear through the writing. My phone was off with no battery. And he's really really really really too polite and didn't want to just ditch me. Now that I think about it...it was only 3 hours.

I'm sorry about what happened to your friend. Pretty surprising that with his Korean ability he was treated so badly.

I don't think capitalism relates to manners. Probably the most coldly efficient country without regard to manners would be the most productive. And I think Korea "can reap all of its fruits regardless of their behavior." I wish there was more justice.

Not profiling, more being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now if they had rounded up all the foreigners in the club and kicked them out, I'd be with you. But stuff like this happens.

Just the two of you went to Octagon? Or was it a group? What I don't get is you say you searched for five hours, but couldn't find him, not one of you decided to look outside? Octagon isn't a very big club and he's black. Should be easy to spot.

And if just the two of you went, you're telling me you stayed in a club by yourself for five hours searching for him? Also, you know your phone is turned off, so normally the first thing a person would do is go somewhere and charge the phone. Not walk around a club for five hours trying to find a black guy in a crowd that's 99% Korean.

I dunno, your whole story sounds made up or skewed to make it seem like Octagon is racist and you guys are the victims.

I thought puking in bars/clubs here was the norm. The locals do it all the time.
You almost can't enter any restroom after 10pm without finding half the toilets clogged with it. Now, puking in the display pool is another matter. Nasty. They should definitely kick that puker out.

No leaning on a bar?? That's a new one.

But, being surprised by racism in Korea? Come on now... your experience barely scratches the surface.

It's too bad he got kicked out, but it is weird he waited 3-5 hours for you outside. Stuck in the friend zone maybe?

Anyway, instead of simply not going there (which won't hurt them much... they'll LOVE fewer foreigners inside regardless), maybe write the manager or the newspaper or make a blog post or something?

Maybe you'll clarify this, but there's uhm, some inconsistencies in your story that kind of need to be noted.

Quote:

So how come you don't remember the subsequent 3-5 hours clearly?

Quote:

I know what those words mean, but that sentence makes no sense.

Quote:

So the white guys happened to be standing outside the club too? Unless they've changed their entrance and smoking policy since last time I was there, no one really chills outside Octagon. They hadn't moved on from getting kicked out or weren't inside clubbin?

Quote:

So either A) You left your phone at the store BEFORE you entered the club and didn't bother for 3-5 hours to go back for it even though he was missing. Or B) You charged it after you left but didn't see him outside the club as you came out meaning he waited for 3-5 hours and decided to leave moments before you yourself exited?

Which I guess is kind of answered by this...

Quote:

Since it seems you weren't in there alone, you were probably with a group of friends, right? Didn't any of your friends notice this? Couldn't you borrow their battery? Or throw a message on facebook?

Or was it just the two of you? In which case he either A)Found you unattractive/drunk/clingy/the club boring and decided to ditch you B)Hooked up with some other girl real quick and left. And if you were alone, wouldn't you have left like 30 minutes into the search to go charge your phone?

Strange that he just happens to go missing while you're having a bathroom break and apparently stops waiting outside the club right before you leave the club to go charge your phone and get the messages as apparently those messages were your first contact.

Also, I've been to Octagon before and plenty of foreigners there of all shades.

Overall a really uhm, unusual, story.
