Hi there!
I am having the exact same issue. I must have applied for over 20 jobs/contacted 20 recruiters....possibly more!
I had an interview with a school manager and the feedback was that I was 'not lively enough' however this was just because I was trying to make sure he understood me (I am Scottish! - could this be a reason?)
Anyway, Im scared now that I wont hear anything again....really hoping to go away in the next few months. I don't have teaching experience.
Anything anyone could suggest?
Thanks so much.

Be flexible on location and apply via a number of different places. Facebook Groups, Craigslist, here and more.
Korea is now more than ever a buyers market and schools can afford to be picky.
If you're willing to work in a Kindergarten Hagwon outside of Seoul then you should be able to find something pretty quickly.
Also change your photo, recruiters often remember a picture but not a name. This might give you a 2nd chance with them. |

Have you tried googling 'getting a fbi check from inside Korea' ?
I just did - you can even copy and paste the key words ^ here

There are jobs abounding (especially outside of Beijing and Shanghai).
The pay may be lower (but not always) and because of the difference in the cost of living you can often SAVE as much or more than you would in Korea.

Right hand side column. A lot of states are dropping. Whether or not this recovery is real or not is another thing. But, if it's true, and let's hope it is, that will cut off the supply of English teachers to Korea. But might be a year or more before we notice it over here. It'll take longer for other countries to pick up though.
Not sure if another "golden age" will occur, but I've already started to see a handful of older teachers and non handsome teachers compared to the changed landscape I saw back in 2010 to 2012ish. (At that time, the demographic had shifted overnight. Very young and mostly attractive or semi attractive people, as Koreans discriminate on appearance.)
Anyways, let's hope things get better in the job market here and more stay home. A lot of States have unemployment rates in the 4 or 5 per cent range (typically considered full employment). So, that may keep folks away. We'll see. |

0 hour contracts in the UK are masking true unemployment figures, plus they changed the way they measure unemployment, so you can't really compare X year to Y year anymore.
The govt are also shifting people into the 'self-employed' category even though they're not really.
But house prices are increasing so that's okay
Govt debt has increased since 2008 and household debt has hardly changed (with historic low interest rates), new car sales have risen hugely over the last few years, as people buy new cars on ‘low interest’ deals.
The mid 20s to early 30s are now used to low interest rates, a study showed that even a 0.25%-0.5% increase in interest rates would push 5-10% of mortgage holders’ right to the edge.
Buy to let landlords are increasing rent, so it’s even harder to save for a deposit on a house, meanwhile getting a buy to let mortgage is still far too easy for anyone with a 20% deposit. They pay a premium for the mortgage though, which is then passed on to renter.
The govt, instead of doing the right thing - raising interest rates now, are waiting till after the next election, in the hope that they get re-elected.
Happy days... |

| I don't know much about this market, but the recruiters do have a blacklist. Not that one should assume that is why nobody is talking to them, but if you pissed someone important off... |

Edmund..
Hi.. What jobs are you applying for ? Are you applying for kindy, bc I am noticing a lot of ads for kindy always ask for women, while I think adult jobs and afternoon hakwons might prefer men.
Also, I am appylng to places myself, and even to jobs where I have experience in and to whom will answer me back, if I don't apply the 1st day or MAYBE 2nd day they put the ad up, they do not call me back.
By the way, on craigslist, I do notice a lot of jobs now asking for people in Korea. So, there might be just so many more teachers that are staying on longer than 1 year in Korea nowadays. And, I think, a hakwon will always take a person in Korea, whom they don't have to pay for the flight, and wait for.
And, by the way, you said you're applying to recruiters, but you should be applying to jobs, . This does get confusing, but you must apply for as many jobs as possible, and I personally find, that jobs where the co. itself (or academy) puts up the ad, are much easier to deal with. |

Thanks again for all the suggestions - as I say, things improved since I made a few tweaks to my application documents and the emails I sent to recruiters.
I'm no longer concerned about my prospects but there's a lot of good information in this thread which may help others. |
