I left my apartment in 3/2013. Today I found out that, even though I called KT, they didn't cancel my internet. They charged me for 7 months and are now charging me for the time I wasn't living there. I have proof I was out of country, proof I was out of the apartment and will look into phone records showing I called them. I called them explaining the misunderstanding and they told me that I would still need to pay 175k. I need help knowing what my next step will be.

How ironic.

A hogwon teacher complaining about not honoring a contract.

You did not follow the terms of the agreement so pay up. Careful they don't take you to the labor board for not paying them. Twisted Evil

It sounds like the OP did do his due diligence. KT didn't.

Why he holier than though stance?

He signed a contract and didn't cancel it properly. Sounds like he called them up blabing in a language they didn't understand. Whose fault is that? The OP's fault.

The OP's signed a contract. Did the OP read the contract? I doubt it. And now he's got a bill to pay.

Whenever I moved in the past, I had a Korean call and cancel my service. No problem. That isn't holier than thou. That's the way you are supposed to do things in Korea.

So you deduced all that from his post? Your entire post is speculation about what you think the OP did before leaving. Maybe he did have a Korean call for him. Maybe he did speak Korean to them. What if the person he talked to spoke English, but misunderstood him? You have no clue about his circumstances.

To the OP: Are you planning on coming back to Korea any time soon? If not, then I wouldn't worry about it. Do you have a friend in Korea that could help you out? If not, then don't worry about it.

You realize they have an English helpline, right? Where the representatives are actually quite fluent?

I faxed them my ID, called their support number, had text messages from their staff. I did everything they asked. The KT staff was friendly and helpful for cancelling... I thought. Now, two years later, I'm told that I didn't do any of that, they aren't listening LALALA. My wife speaks Korean, they are telling her the same thing in Korean. I need to know my legal options. I have no clue where to get that info.

Stan, stop flaming my thread. I was a public teacher in inner-city Houston before coming here. I've taught a year public in Korea. I'm a ten-year experienced teacher. I have honored every contract I've ever signed. Who are you? Moderator, please deal with this guy for flaming and hijacking. However, thanks for bumping my thread, this thing is giving me crazy stress ^^v

I'm in Korea now. Have a half-Korean son and hope to live here a long while. My wife talked to them in Korean. From what she read, this is not an uncommon occurrence. However, I don't know what I can do legally or just to prove to them I did cancel. Definitely a time when it sucks to be a foreigner, even if I'm pasty white ^^

I had a similar issue, I called to cancel my internet because I was moving. They cancelled it and sent me a verification text along with the final amount due. Paid it. Then the next month I received a text saying I owed another month. Called them, said I had a text saying it was cancelled, blah blah. They wouldn't take it off. I think they finally sent me to collections because I kept getting calls and texts from the same number. Anyways, I never paid it, no idea what happened to it. Hopefully I don't get arrested and stripe searched at the airport trying to skip out on 28 bucks.

Still sounds like you didn't cancel the contract properly. Did you even read the contract and the terms for breaking the contract? Did you get a final receipt or confirmation from the company saying it was canceled? Did you keep records of that?

If not pay up.

I'm not trying to flame you. I've seen many foreigners in Korea who don't think paying their bills and taking the contracts they sign seriously, except of course if the contract is from the school. Then it's all different. Rolling Eyes

But hey don't take my advice. Listen to those who said don't worry about it. Not taking things seriously has gotten you this far. See where it takes you. Laughing
