Does anyone know if there is an active straightedge scene? I read on a hardcore blog that was probably less than 100 Koreans who would label themselves as straightedge especially the follow of the korean band "The Geeks" where little half of the members are SXE.

Being Straightedge myself. I would like to meet up with people who share the same beliefs. I'm not much into that hardcore bands like most east coast bands, but I do occasionally listen to Crime in Stereo and Polar Bear Club.

I really do like xLooking Fowardx though

Anyone straightedge here?

I had to Google it...

Straight edge is a subculture and subgenre of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs. It was a direct reaction to the sexual revolution, hedonism, and excess associated with punk rock. For some, this extends to refraining from engaging in promiscuous sex, following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and not using caffeine or prescription drugs. The term was adopted from the song "Straight Edge" by the hardcore punk band Minor Threat.

Koreans drink and smoke, but they don't do drugs, and neither do they listen to punk rock, and they aren't vegetarians, and like to have sex. So probably almost nobody.

There's a fairly big punk and hardcore scene in Hongdae. And I'm pretty sure that not all Koreans drink and smoke and that some do indeed partake in the use of drugs.

yeah true that. I know a couple dudes from Seoul who plays in punk hardcore/noise rock bands but they're not straightedge, but they're cool to hang out with. I was thinking that if there are any straightedge people it would be in Hongdae. But I'm going to be in Busan which im 99% sure there isn't anyone here by that

Ive always been straight edge, 42 years now, but I play psychedelic rock. Go figure.

I also love stoner rock like Dead Meadow and psych rock like the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, all very pro-drug.

Never touched anything in my life. Dont drink, dont smoke, I guess when I have a gf, I may not abstain from that. I also eat a lot of raw food.

Never really thought about it. hmmm

I don't think 'the scene' exists here. In that I don't think it was ever...imported.

While I'm sure people with similar interests / habits to yours are out there, just without explicitly labeling themselves as such, it may be tricky finding them since they're not walking around with signs on their heads.

My advice:

If you want to find a high density of people who like the music you like, check out bars / events in Hongdae.

If you want to find a high density of people who abstain from drinking, smoking, and perhaps even sex, start going to church.
Actually though. The people I've met in Korea who ticked all those boxes are all devout Christians. And nothing wrong with that! Lovely folks.

Yes...you can find just about anything in Itaewon....I just meant it's not readily available everywhere.
