| Hi all. After a three year break from teaching, I'm returning to Seoul for another 5 year stint/ tour of duty. That is the plan anyway. If I'm unable to find a decent uni gig, will think about teaching in China or Vietnam. Flying in on a tourist visa, I'll be needing casual accommodation for a couple of months. Could anyone recommend a decent 'hasuk', or some other place they've found reasonable. Budget-wise, looking for something in the mid-range. Cheers~ |

| I sent you a pm with details on a nice officetel requiring No Key Money available short-term at Migeum Station, Bundang (20 minutes to Gangnam on express subway). Available starting October 1. |

Thanks for the offer. I won't be flying in until December, just in time for winter! Having found an informative thread in the FAX section, I'm thinking of booking into a cheapish motel downtown round Jongno or Insa-dong for the first few days. Will then look around for a cheaper month-long deal at a 'hasuk' or 'goshiwon'.
Who knows, an ex-colleague may yet come through with an offer to house-sit.

Help please^^
I'm aboot to fly into Seoul in order to be there for university interviews. I thought I had a Bundang apartment, which had been organized for months with a poster here who goes by the handle of ttompatz. Well, he has pulled the rug out from under me with just a week to go before I fly.
Does anyone know of an apartment, or a room, that's available for a couple of months? Cheers~~ |

Try a goshion or a living tel. Some of them can be considerably bigger than others but still not huge. No key money, no commitment past a month.
Just like jobs, it is easier to hunt while in country.

Accomodation in seoul is a real issue. For koreans, foreign ppl, everyone.
YOur plan is straight out of 1998 haha.
Even people on real visas with housing are having a hard time getting good jobs.
Uni job? If you have a MA and two years korean uni experience, then you might be considered.
On a tourist visa your options will be limited to illegal schools or schools willing to be your visa sponsor.
Seems like an uphill battle for sure. |

Yes I thought so too, which is why I pursued organizing it on-line with him.
Long story, short: I was originally going to deposit the first month's rent into an account, but because he didn't have an account in Canada [still apparently doesn't] and because there was some foreign exchange issues [kiwi/ Korean won/ Canadian etc] we planned to pay once in the country, and in the apartment. Also, I tried to contact the Korean owner/ lease-holder of the apartment to no effect [as confirmation it was all legit].
Anyway, a couple of days ago I received an email stating I was to pay 560 Canadian immediately into some third parties bank account [his mother? can't quite remember]. Having still not heard from a Korean third party,I countered negotiated with an immediate deposit of $300 and payment in advance of all funds once I was in the apartment. I thought this was fair... I was putting some skin in the game...yet it was not too much money to lose should it all turn out to be an elaborate scam [which I didn't think it was] To this he just said sorry we couldn't do a deal, he had people queuing up for the apartment, and good luck with the Skype interviews.
Wow! After 40 odd emails, and a week before flying in.

Sure, I have an MA and six years of uni experience. And yes after reading this forum for a bit, I can see the things aren't as good as they were a few years back. I've got 3 Skype uni interviews next week. All out of Seoul but. Am thinking I may have to settle for somewhere like Daejon. Could be worse. |

Cheers, I've decided to delay my flight a month. During that time I will email all ex-colleagues and look for a house-sitting situation. Surely there have to be a few stressed out teachers in Seoul of to the Phillipines for a 2 month break! |

Sounds like a bit of a run around. Unfortunate to be sure.
No doubt he has reasons for his behavior...perhaps he will share them here to make this matter clearer. |

Yes, which is why I was so surprised. Just out of the blue, a week before flying in, 'put 560 dollars in this account', and the following day, no response to my negotiation [will put 300 in now, and pay all the rest of the 2 months on moving in], just 'sorry but I have others offering to put the money in right here right now'. If he is the decent guy you say he is then the only thing I can think of is he is really desperate for money. Still....Anyway. |

I wish he would've shared them with me a few days ago.
This is a guy who likes to share information as we all see on this board. And then his emails were quite impressive- a lot of info, details, maps etc that much time had gone into. Then suddenly bang, all over. Seemed a little empathy was lacking on his part. |
