So now by basically saying that minorities are not as well respected as people think, you stretched that into me being a racist and having a white man inferiority.
First of all, I was talking about Canadians in general, not myself. Am I white? Do you know that for sure? Have I ever posted on this site saying I am white?
And if you consider women a minority, you are a fool. They make up like 51% of the population.

So by this quote I can tell what kind of person you are. You feel your rights as a privileged white guy are more important than those of minorities, and thus modern Canada is a hellhole because those minorities have gained rights which you feel have been stolen from you. I get your POV now. It's hard to argue that, because it makes no sense to begin with. But at least we know where you're coming from. Blacks/gays/Natives/women/etc. don't actually deserve those rights, it's just PC culture run amok against good hard working white men like yourself. You poor fellow! Yeah, I guess you're right then. For people like you, for people with worldviews like you, the country certainly has gotten worse. Thank god.

In my case, I concur that MBC is a fool.
On page one, Ditch stated...
"I had better service with more modern technology in Thailand!"
MBC misquoted Ditch, and transformed it into an attack on the entire Canadian medical system.
I simply justified the statement made by Ditch.
As exemplified by the premier International hospital in the world being in Thailand, yes it is surely possible that Ditch could have a better medical experience in Thailand than in Canada, and many other people have made similar claims in the 60 Minutes video I posted about it. |

A lifer? A DEEP question...
A Question I ask myself often and we really get into it sometimes~~
Do you have a stable job that suits your interests and field that you presently study or studied in the past?
Sure~!
Do you have a solid family network IN Korea?
Yes...
Do you have a decent social life with locals and/or expats?
I like to think so...
Are there avenues for professional advancement (and income)?
If I put the work in, sure~
Do you have OTHER interests/hobbies that keep you occupied and interested
while living there?
Plenty~!
Can you truly be a functioning and contributing member of that society?
Again, I like to think so...
Do you really understand the complexities of that nation and
and conform to it as necessary with all it's faults, quirks and odd nuances?
Ummm....Yep, not a problem. So far! *wink*
Ah! BUT! Do you have the understanding and support of family in your
native country??? Any familial obligations weighing on your mind????
ooohhh...good one! Yes....and no.
So, you're saying that you're in good health mind, body and soul now and
forever more so help you God?
ha....uh....yeah? As well as, if not better, than my own native land~
Even if your body is burned to crisp in a heap of ashes and bones, buried in this foreign
soil and you STILL have no problem with that???
Good to go!
Bah! F'n lifer...
Cheers!
ONE LAST QUESTION! You're going down!!!
Can you drink soju and mokkoli and post on Dave's in a humorous manner?
Argh...you got me! Just joking, good to go brother!
&*%#$%....don't say I didn't try to help you!
Have a good one! |

@guavashake: Where did I misquote Ditch? Hell, where did I even quote him?
However, he made a sweeping generalization of the Canadian health care system, comparing it to Korea and one place in Thailand. This is not supported by facts. You can keep saying, "Well, I don't care what the facts say, I don't think it's as good!" all you want, but again, the facts don't support it.
"I visited North Korea and had an excellent meal. Therefore, North Korean agriculture is better than Canada!"
The fact that you or Ditch can go to Thailand and pay thousands of dollars for certain health care has nothing to do with the health care system in Canada. Your one tiny example from your obviously biased perspective does not negate dozens and dozens of studies over the decades that prove the complete opposite. Even in this small case you mention, medical tourism, if you can provide numbers showing droves of Canadians going to Thailand to get health care I'll take a look. Not people from surrounding poor countries, and not 2 Canadians in the last 20 years. Actual proof to back up your claim.
@ Cave Dweller: I have no idea if you're white (Not that there's anything wrong with that, it doesn't diminish your opinions. Your words do that for you). It doesn't really matter anyway, as I said you showed what kind of person you are with your rants against "PC culture" that takes away your right to speak your mind against others who didn't "build the country". We're all adults here. We've all watched Fox News. We all know the code words. The fact that you have to run to semantics about women being a minority instead of actually understanding the realities of society is a good tell.
Anyway, like I said it's just sad that you guys can't just be happy with your lives in Korea instead of bashing your home country by making up lies and exaggerations. Good to see you've completely ignored all the parts where I point out your lies and exaggerations. I'm sure you "feel" like Canada is a terrible place. It's too bad that the facts don't support you. There's certainly issues to be discussed and problems that are getting worse. But it's people like you who just make things up and lie who stop us from actually addressing those problems. Like I've said, this seething hatred of your home country combined with the lies you've told here says way more about you than Korea, Canada or anyone else.
But that's fine. Keep harping on all those people ruining Canada who didn't "help build it", and then come here and complain how racist Koreans are against you just because you weren't born here. And try to stay healthy, I sincerely hope you don't have to find out how great the health care system is here if you get a serious illness. |

So anyone who doesn't like PC culture is automatically a racist?
How about those who simply want to live in a meritocracy?

In response to your questions...
You did write:
"Thailand has better health care than Canada. Yeah... ok."
And you wrote it in reference to a post made by Ditch, didn't you.
The problem is, Ditch didn't say that.
What Ditch did is, he provided a personal anecdote of his medical experiences in Canada and Thailand.
This thread is about expats and their experiences.
And, as logic would have it, one individual, singular expat has one individual, singular life to provide personal anecdotes about.
And providing personal anecdotes is a perfectly reasonable thing to do on this forum, and this topic.
As logic would also have it, one singular expat would go to one singular hospital, not all the hospitals in a country.
As logic would also have it, an expat would likely go to an international hospital.
You called him out as if you demand a comprehensive report about every hospital in Thailand, Canada and Korea.
Actually, the video I provided about the international hospital did give information on the number of international patients they receive annually. If you want the number of Canadians specifically, ask them yourself.
Back to your questions.
If you innocently claim you didn't quote Ditch, I can rephrase.
You made a wrongful reference to his statement, transforming his statement into something that he did not write nor imply.
You put forth misinformation to further your own long-winded rants, and you do it at the expense of others.
By the way, synonyms for misinformation include lies and wild exaggerations.
You make reference to dozens and dozens of reports without identifying the reports, and at the same time demand facts and figures from a guy who did the very normal and reasonable act of providing a personal anecdote in a thread about the personal anecdotes of expats.
It is evident why you engage in tedious debates with a poster called steelrails. Convoluted birds of a feather flock together. |

This forum is ridiculous.
Ditch said one reason to not live in Canada is because he received better health care in Thailand. That is stupid statement, as shown by my sarcastic aside to someone having a good meal in North Korea and then saying NK has a better agricultural system. I don't know this one little experience of his, but it doesn't matter. It doesn't fit the norm. It is likely sheer hyperbole.
But it doesn't matter, because it has nothing to do with the topic at hand if you want to phrase it the way you are now. What difference does it make that one guy got better treatment at a Thai hospital one time when we're talking about Canadian health care in general (in regards to why you wouldn't live in Canada). I didn't get murdered in South Africa that one time I went. Does that mean SA has a lower homicide rate than Canada? And I won't go ask the Thai hospital how many Canadians went there because I was not the one making the point that Thai hospitals are better than Canadian ones. You made that point, you provide the proof. Otherwise we can assume you've been proven wrong once again.
None of this matters, though. I've already embarrassingly proved everything else you said was wrong, and now you're just running on semantics to grasp onto some shred of dignity.
Seriously. This is what this site has come to. People arguing that Thailand has better health care than Canada. And that a G8 country is 3rd world. Like I said, if you have to go to these extremes to convince everyone that your home country is so terrible, you're really just showing everyone what kind of person you are. |

No, that statement in combination with everything you said here gives the impression that you have very, let's say "traditional", views.
Again, it doesn't matter. You believe what you believe. I'm not going to continue arguing whether the sky is blue with you people. |

I'm not sure if I will be a "lifer", but I will probably be here another 5-10 years.
I am married to a Korean, and we manage to save quite a bit between her job and the few I do. I always wonder if I can put up with it for another 10, then throw all my savings into a business back home. or do it for 15 and retire somewhere like Thailand.
Having a kid would obviously change everything |
