South Korea–land of high suicide rates, elderly poverty and hyper-stressed students. But just how unhappy are Koreans?
A new global survey offers some data on the subject, ranking South Koreans 75th out of 135 countries in well-being. |
Quote: |
South Korea ranked lower in the survey than most of Asia. Malaysia was 36th, Taiwan 55th, Japan 64th, and China finished lower at 90th. Panama got first place in the survey while Afghanistan and Syria tied last. North Korea was not included in the survey. |
Again, the proof is in the pudding. The data clearly shows that Koreans themselves admit they are suffering. If you care about Koreans so much that you are motivated to defend them at every opportunity, then why not admit that this place needs serious and massive change.

No kidding eh. cmxc would like us all to join him in his blanket generalizations about a country of 50 million people. |

Actually, saving all the Koreans is my job. I don't appreciate people stepping into my turf. |

Is your mission to post every negative article about Korea in hopes of turning future ESLers away? What are you doing to help promote change in the country? Are you currently with an organization that is trying to promote change within Korea? What is your motivation? |

Why not admit you are dumb for going to a country you don't even like? |

I would like to say that the question might have different meanings in different countries. I think Koreans, even those who are obviously thriving, will often say they are struggling either to be polite and not to stand out and brag or because they believe they shouldn't be considered thriving until they are Bill Gates. A lot of them adopt some really lofty standards for themselves that might exceed reasonable expectations and have negative results for their satisfaction but on the other hand might motivate them to strive and to continue to improve. |

They are so unhappy that only 1/6 staff members (a chick i was bangin) would try the chili i made fresh in the lounge. They all had some sad, sorry excuse why they couldn't eat the chili I cooked them. |

That little story encapsulates excatly the kind of mindset you sometimes have to deal with. They cannot handle positivity. Chip on the shoulder? who knows. |

They are not unhappy, they just love whinging about things and can never just be thankful for what they have.
In that way they are like the British. |

UK - 26th
Double the amount of respondents (in comparison to Korea) said they were happy.
All of the E2 visa countries were in the top 30.
If you can live happily in Korea then fair play to you, but some of the excuses and denial in this thread are shocking. |

Got to share this:
In a shop and this lady starts talking to me and bragging how her son and daughter immigrated and her husband is doing business in the US. Then she asked me if I liked Korea, and then she said it may be a little far to ask if you think Korea is number 1?
Nowadays, I always say Korea is just Korea, its not good or bad. Im way past the point of face or making people feel good for the sake of niceities, I dont make them feel bad though.
Is there not a serious disconnect? If Korea was number 1, why would people emigrate?
I dont think people are happy, but I think it may be changing, but it also may be too late. Who knows?
I stopped teaching adults in Gangnam because I was sick of hearing how much people "envied" me for my active and hobby-filled lifestyle. All you have to do is take a step, one step. But alas.
So unhappy. |
