| I just moved to Anseong and it's alright, but I have a feeling I will spend most weekends exploring other parts of the country. Anyway, I was in Pyeongtaek last weekend and was wondering where the "newer" part of town is? My bus got let me off near the AK Center,which is the crappy part of town-no? I just wandered around there for a bit and wasn't too impressed (although TJ Puffins had some good Italian/Mexican/etc food), but it sounds like I completely missed the "good" part of town. How do I get there from the AK Center or what landmarks should I look for from the bus? |

Uh...the area next to AK Plaza IS downtown. I don't think it's that bad.
I've been living in Pyeongtaek for almost 2 years now. |

The "better" part of town is basically 10 minutes walk in any direction away from the station. Bear in mind there aren't really any sites that constitute "tourist attractions" as such and you're basically going to be faced with just another generic collection of ghetto-ized apartments and concrete, but it's more residential and waaayyy less grimy the further you get from "ground zero".
Try the area around Newcore/Lotte Mart for a start. Whether it's worth heading all the way from Anseong to hang out in is dubious, but it's a lot more liveable, albeit it farther from escape routes and public transport than the cesspool downtown.
If you want something really different to the rest of Korea jump the subway north from Pyeongers and ride it for 3 stops to Songtan (don't take the express as it skips Songtan station). Takes 12 minutes. It's still technically part of Pyeongtaek-shi, but being next to Osan Airbase it has the feeling of a small US town or something. A significantly less retarded version of Itaewon. Grab a taxi outside Songtan station and tell the driver "main gate". Will cost you 2,500 won or so. Later you can walk, but at first it's the better way to get your bearings.
To get home just take all the same steps in reverse.
I think the maroon colored Incheon Airport Bus from Anseong also stops in Songtan after passing through Pyeongtaek. |

| Songtan is all foreigner bars. Quite a few styles of food as well. I usually eat at one of the mexican places. They have one with real mexican cooks...but I like the smaller place with the korean cook. |

| OMG-Mexican? Seriously, that's been my biggest craving. Going from eating it for many meals to none has been a big adjustment...=/ I'll probably be heading to Songtan sooner than later, haha |

Is there any way of getting back from Seoul to Pyungtaek at night? I'd really like to make the most of the Seoul nightlife. |

| Not after 11 or 12 when the trains and buses stop. Stay out late and catch the early train (5:30 ish) or go with friends and split a taxi home (around 100k). |

If by 'not great to look at' you mean the ugliest place on earth bar none, then I would have to agree. Pyeongtaek brings a whole new ugliness, even when comparing it to other cities in the generally extremely ugly towns and cities of Korea. |
Although I've never been to these place, there's ugliness all over, especially in areas built up until several years ago. Beauty and scenery has only become something worth seeing lately. If you live in some newer areas the Koreans call "Shin Shi GaJi" or New town of most cities, you'll see dumpy looking buildings crammed together with narrow streets and litter everywhere.
Newer areas will have trees, grass, bigger parks, and better looking siding used on the buildings with wider sidewalks. Outside of Seoul Gyeong gi area, villas in these new areas are often reasonable.
Anyhow, ugliness looks the same in most every Korean town. |
