An example in my family is... FIL (really decent bloke by all standards) does some (by today's standards) rude behavior in public. My wife tells him to stop. He responds with "you're my daughter, you shouldn't correct me".
So even though all around, likely including my FIL, knows it's "wrong", it's more wrong to correct him. |
They still believe the laws of Confucian relationships...
There will be little social advancement or social justice here until they discard this prehistoric mentality. |
Oh my, you people really are something special. |

Western women don't turn their head to the side when they drink in front of me...it's so disrespectful, when are they going to change their barbaric ways?? |
Why would they? For that matter, why would anyone do that in front of you? |
Why would anyone say "bless you" after someone sneezes, it serves no purpose. Why would Germans believe you should keep your elbows off the table top. Why would Koreans believe you should make a "jap jap" sound when food is good. Why would Westerners believe you should keep your mouth closed when chewing.
Welcome to traveling the world and cultural differences 101. Shocking as it may sound your peculiar customs are not universal. |
Regardless chewing with your mouth open, belching at the dinner tables, and scratching your @$$ at the same time will still make you seem like an uncultured simpleton. Cultural differences aside. Don't expect me to want to dine with you, especially in public. The world makes us come together. Adopt some my culture and I'll adopt some of yours. Heck it's so bad in China that the government has asked Chinese to behave themselves when travelling abroad. East Asian manners seem to provoke a lot of ire in the rest of the world. |

Calling Korea 'barbaric' smacks of a hilarious drama-queen outburst from someone with eggshell skin. Yes, there is a lot of very uncouth behaviour here, but I don't recall anyone getting their heads chopped off, or being stoned to death. That is probably a more apt use of the word 'barbaric'.
The pushing, staring, questionable table manners, and spitting is not exactly delightful, but if you really can't stand it then you shouldn't be in Asia. |

Seems relevant.
I imagine if we studied ability to adapt to the local environment and success in international business, they would be highly correlated. As would be failure, and bitching on the internet. |

No, not so much. It's actually a fairly dumb correlation. |

Well, from my experience working with firms trying to do business here, I would say understanding the local culture is HIGHLY related to success. Not only understanding the culture, but liking it, will get you even further. But understanding it is bare minimum. |

I'd say from my experience living in kangnam and working in firms doing business there that I killed it not only in the bank but also in the extra curricular field. I'm about as cultured as one can get, hence my success. You people should get more cultured. |

More or less. Although I don't get into "should", just point out how things are... |

More or less, you people kind of need to step up your game if you want to be taken seriously internationally. Travelling 101 suggests it. |

Not at all. I just mean that if you let it get to you, you will end up a basket case. |

Isn't that obvious? Is it still wise words if a monkey would have said the same thing? |
