I guess I always suspected the Korean government would try and drive out anything foreign owned. They sure don't like their economy to have too much growth by regulating it too much. Sucks if they do have to leave.

"Big-box retailers in South Korea such as Tesco and Costco Wholesale Corp are reluctantly bowing to government demands aimed at protecting local merchants. There are signs that Seoul's new restrictions could scare off investors."

Good!

They should also tighten restrictions to scare off McD, BurgerKing, KFC and SBUX.

I love a government that punishes the consumer! (That was sarcasm, fyi.) Taking away options is rarely a good thing.

you must be joking. lotteria is an abomination. lotte mart and emart have been not only gouging koreans for years, but they were laughably stale until the competition came in and forced them to modernize.

"I understand that traditional markets are having a hard time. But we would go (to traditional markets) if they made it easier to shop there. It's not about policies ordering closures on Sundays, it's about having better products, cheaper prices and easier parking," said Kim Seung-won, a Homeplus shopper.

You mentioned KFC, and that reminded me of something. Korean KFC is vile, no doubt about it, but I just returned from the UK and we had it there and it was surprisingly delicious. Anyone else notice the taste difference?

i get that you love mother korea, and you're entitled to your opinion, but come on man, you just make yourself look like a clown.

Next to Homeplus, E-mart and Lotte Mart are abortions.

I bet another reason they're considering leaving is the forced Sunday closing. This gov't doesn't seem to know how to keep their fat fingers out of the free market.

He doesn't love Korea. He hates the non-Korea. These two emotions appear very similar superficially until you deconstruct his arguments.

He wants non-Korean chains and big-box stores to leave. Great, he loves Korea, right? Well, no. If he loved Korea, he'd be open to even more competition and more free-market, because that would be much, much better for the Korean consumer, who I guarantee you is a much larger population than the population that benefits from less competition.

BTW, who benefits from less competition in Korea? Well, I bet Korean executives of Korean chains are going to make out like bandits as they will be able to raise the prices of goods and services and drive up their profit margin. Mom and Pop stores will also benefit. Now, what percentage of the population do these two groups make up? Probably less than 1%.

The remaining 99% will see their disposable income go down, the quality of goods go down, and their available choices go down. Mission accomplished Korea?

This is another argument we can deconstruct for further proof that KM hates non-Korea vs. loving Korea.

Superficially, he wants these unhealthy fast food chains out of Korea, for the benefit of Koreans health (we can only surmise.)

However, if he truly had Korean health in mind, he wouldn't have limited himself to calling for the removal of foreign fast-food chains. Rather, he would have called for the removal of *all* fast food chains. This is pretty telling. He truly doesn't give a damn about the overall public health, he just hates whitey and wants them off his turf.

As someone who can honestly say that i've had the good fortune to live here for the last decade and counts himself in that 99%, I totally agree with you. This is bad for the majority of us.

Nope. I hate the idea of 40+ million people seeing their disposable income go down, the quality of goods go down, and their available choices reduced. You don't?

Nope, Korea's strategy of impairing large chains and supporting "mom and pop" seems fine. If they don't like it, they can leave.

Only reason I go to Homeplus over Emart is because Homeplus has more 1+1 sales and better ice cream. The rest of the stuff is priced nearly the same from what I can tell.

What is "fine" about it? Robbing the vast majority of choice and lowering their disposable income?

Taking the long view seem smart.
