The teachers’ skeptical view was shared by their counterparts at elementary schools, as just 25 percent of the teachers there agreed that English should be taught before children started attending school.
Slightly more than half of the kindergarten teachers who opposed it said early English education is “not appropriate for the development and education of preschoolers,” while 16.5 percent said it hinders the child’s acquisition of his or her mother language. |
I'd be willing to bet that if you were to ask a follow up question, such as - 'do you feel confident in teaching English up to X specific age group' there would be a direct correlation between the 'yes' votes agreeing with the early English education votes and the 'no' votes who do not want English taught..... |

I'm guessing they're just pissed when first graders run English circles around them.

Cute but an invalid opinion considering the fact that relevant academic research and literature on the subject (over the last 60 years or so) shows just the opposite.
Very young children raised and educated in a multilingual environment from entry into pre-K show higher results academically and linguistically, and lose NOTHING from their mother tongue (since they have continual exposure outside of the school environment).
