The examples of "non-assimilation" which she had enumerated up to that point seemed pretty trivial to me. Nothing in what I saw was actually racist, though; it was all directed at specific local behaviors, not any kind of suggestion of racial supremacy or inferiority. She even suggested that another Chinatown in America wasn't subject to the same criticism. |

Koreans don't want us to assimilate. They want to maintain a clear distinction between themselves and the rest of the world. Foreigners who struggle to use chopsticks and don't know more than five words of Korean help maintain that distinction. |

Heck, Koreans in Korea don't want actual Koreans who've spent "too much time" overseas or even have fled North Korea to assimilate. They don't even want to believe Koreans born in Korea to one Korean parent and one foreign parent are Korean. The law may say one thing, but the culture is abusively another.

I liked the criticism of the sidewalks being crowded. Clearly the fault of the Chinese. |

Yeah, like it should be Kansas or something. It's San Fransisco, for god's sake. |

Well, to be fair it is way more crowded than most other places in SF, being more on par with NYC in terms of foot traffic on the streets, but I think that's more a function of narrow sidewalks in a very dense area than anything else (and those narrow sidewalks may tie into Chinatown's population being an underrepresented population politically). |

So, was the ranting woman actually a tour guide on her last day at work or just some random bigot spewing profanity and racist comments? |

I agree with you there. Some writers of the day back in the late 19th century in San Fransisco lamented the fact that the Chinese were looked down on. So, I guess nothing has changed. |
