Yes, there is the annual publishing requirement (10 page, double spaced, any topic). Kind of like a term paper, actually, and you get paid extra for it. It can be published in any publication (and they have several in-house).
The downside of the job is the commute on the school bus from Seoul three times per week (about 1.5 hours each way, door to door). Salary is one of the best in Seoul (4.1 per month plus housing, plus chances for OT, plus long vacations).
The current faculty chair is a good guy; the previous one was a bit of a jealous control freak. She stepped down before the end of her two year term, however. |

4.1 million won PLUS housing for the Practical English Department of HUFS?
The advertisement said 2.26 mill. I think you must be talking about another department.......coz that is simply not true.
I heard that all profs had to get published in an international journal.....and HUFS does have ONE journal that you can submit to once a year (not several as you have said)......but there's no guarantees to get published there. A buddy of mine who used to work there, told me that he didn't get published as almost every prof at HUFS submitted and there was a limited number of publications.
Again, my info is up to date, but your info seems way off. |

I know the publishing "requirement" is in place in the translation studies department, as I interviewed there last year. I wouldn't look at this as a requirement at all, however, as it's an opportunity to get some extra cash for something you should probably be doing anyway (if you're getting 4.1+ for such light hours). Additionally, there is A LOT of support given to teachers who have not published before, which is again, a great chance to put something in that application space that asks for publications.
The way the best uni gigs are going (and should be), an MA or MSEd in TESOL/applied linguistics won't be enough with a few years experience alone. Soon there will be much more of a demand for people who are active in the professional organizations, publishing, and showing annual professional development. When you start doing these things, you start to see that your uni is pretty keen to pay for membership and publishing application fees, as well as an extra chunk of change when you publish in a journal worth its salt.

I was referring to the English interpretation and translation department (no 2nd language required, only English). The 4.1 per month is based on someone with 10 years of teaching experience (it may pay even more now). I wasn't too familiar with the practical English department people, but I know they were paid substantially less, even though they did essentially the same work...............
HUFS has several journals, contrary to what the other poster says - law school, college of education, college of international area studies, etc. Any of them will do for your publication requirement as will any outside journal. Accredited international journal publication will get you a lot more money from HUFS, as they crave the status.............. |

By the way, I was in charge of foreign faculty recruitment for one year at the Yongin campus of HUFS (English interpretation and translation dept.) Screened all of the resumes, selected people for interviews, interviewed them (along with 2-3 other faculty members), and then (solely) determined which ones to recommend to the faculty chair for hiring.
So I have a pretty good idea about how it works there............. |

^ Well this thread is about the op, who went for an interview and afterwards got hired at the Foreign Language Education Center, which is essentially the Practical English Dept under a different name.
Good that you clarified, which department you worked at though. |

The only other change from the advertisement is that teachers find their own housing off-campus, and there is a 800,000won housing allowance added to the salary each month.

I was under the impression that starting in the fall, everyone had to move into the faculty dormitory. It's required. PM me...I don't have enough quotes. |

The Chair told me that I'd get up to a million won, or more, per paper that I published. Probably even get paid something even if the articles didn't make it into the journals.
Good incentive to get published. but that was offset by crap schedule and demanding admin. |

| Just like SNU, HUFS is a revolving door. Almost every semester I see HUFS job postings. |
