Hey all,
Wondering if anyone has been in this situation before. I came to Korea just over 5 weeks ago with EPIK and have been in my flat for 4 weeks. Turns out my water usgae was extremely high for this month, and this is due to a fault in the toilet system releasing water through the pipes continuously. I heard water but thought it was just normal drainage.
Now school/maintenance/landlord thinks it's my responsibility to pay the over 300,000w water bill, even though I had no idea there was even a problem with it and I haven't touched any pipes or anything.
I DO NOT want to pay this obv, but I'm worried that if I don't, it will ruin my rship with my CT and school. I was also thinking of contacting the POE.
Any advice here...?
Thank you. |

Have you seen a REAL water bill - not just an amount written on a bit of paper? |

No, this is what the maintenance folk have told the admin office at my school, and then my CT told me. |

So it'll be a shared water bill for the whole apt, I'm guessing.
They 'may' be being honest with you, or they may be telling porkies...
So you say this has happened since you arrived, how long was it broken for before you came?
300,000 seems SUPER HIGH!
I pay under w5,000 per month for my water. Ask to see the bill.
It may be the case that water is like electricity - with a tiered pricing system that goes up as you use more.... ask to see the bill, ask if the bill is for all of the apartment building and they are assuming the amount 'on top of the normal usage' is yours..... |

Cool, thank you. My CT did say it was definitely just for my apartment, and it seemed to start like the day I moved in...I'll ask to see the bill though. |

You sure it's not a miscommunication? Koreans love to say 200 when they mean 20, or 300 when they mean 30. |

Similar post on Reddit a while back.. consensus was that the guy who noticed a sound from the toilet but did not know what it was was mostly responsible for the bill. If he had reported the sound to management immediately he would be free of responsibility.
Sounds reasonable to me. Sucky situation, though. |

I'd ask to see the original bill. If you heard the water and it was continuously draining, didn't you ever wonder if it was something to be worried about? |

Koreans suck with numbers. They have less than 3000 years of proven history but they like to say they have 5000 years.
Don't trust Kimchininja with numbers either. He tells his wife it's 6 inches but it's closer to 6 cm.
