Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum and I have been thinking about teaching in Korea. I've read somewhere on the internet that most English teaching jobs in Korea require the teachers to be certified in TEFL/ TESOL etc. Can anyone please share whether this is correct and break down the pros and cons? Any knowledge will be appreciated!
Thanks guys!

Depends on what you want to teach. Hagwons don't really care. For public schools (EPIK), you'll need it if you don't have at least bachelors in English, Education, or Linguistics. Given the stiff competition for EPIK jobs, it would probably hurt NOT to have one.

If you're really interested, focus more on getting the required documents together for your E-2 visa, as they can take a while. http://www.footprintsrecruiting.com/learn-about-teaching-abroad/country-guides/country/south-korea/americans-e2-visa-instructions

Thanks Takethree! Do you know if the place where you get Tesol certificate is significant in terms of job search? My guts are telling me that where you get your certificate doesn't matter a lot, but I just want to make sure. Smile

In Korea??
Almost worthless.
Your looks and age are MUCH more important than certs.
Unless you're looking at an intl school or university. And even then.....

Only useful if say, you've been accepted to EPIK and you're tryin to jump up a level in pay.

For hagwon jobs it is not required.
As mentioned above it IS a requirement for jobs with EPIK unless you fit into one of their "exempt" categories.

For EPIK the TEFL NEEDS to be a mionimum of 100 hours of course work AND have at least 20 hours of that as "in class" time.
A 100% on-line certificate won't work.
For work in Busan in a school your TEFL needs at least 60 hours of in-class time.

The course provider doesn't matter.

So.. if you are Asian in his early 20s, how would your job search go?

Well, early 20s is great! Everyone will like your age.
Asian? Hit or miss. I mean, there will be places that reject you because you're not White. Be prepared for that. Also, you'll see ads that ask for female only. However, there are a considerable amount of ads asking for bilingual gyopos. So, if you speak Korean well, it could help you a lot. If you dont, like Chinese-American or something, I'd suggest public programs like TALK or EPIK that don't discriminate quite so much.
