Korean electronics manufactures are at, or almost at their peaks. There are tons of companies in Asia, from India, China, and even the Philippines that are producing pretty good phones, and electronics at the almost the same quality, but for half the price. It's only a matter of time before they figure out mass manufacturing, and marketing in order to dethrone Korean tech companies, just like the Koreans did to the Japanese a decade ago.

Sure, that mirrors some analyst opinions. But it assumes Korean companies remain still, while foreign companies adapt. In reality both Korean and foreign companies will adapt simultaneously.

Also Koreans don't like "almost as good", I hear a lot of "oh, that's crappy Chinese quality". Look at Apple for example, lots of cheaper stuff out there, but they have the fat profit margins.

So there's lots of stuff at play here, not easy to know the future.

Don't get me wrong, I do hope Korean companies can stay competitive. But, when you're at the top, you tend to get arrogant. The Japanese made that mistake, American automakers too. We're even starting to see Japanese car makers starting to slip with their quality and safety. And Samsung, and LG, better have learned something from it, because those no-name companies will be constantly at their heels. Dynasties can last only so long.

I don't disagree with this, I just see KR as being 30yrs away from the JP/US dead-end. Seems a bit too early to call it "the top".

I figure at least another 10 years, based on the past.

1975-2000 - Japanese companies made their names
2000-2025-ish -Korea's time in the light
2025-???? - ???? Chinese? Taiwanese? Thais? Romanians? Ugandans? Brazilians?

I'm betting on Vietnam for 2025. Their cities are finally coming around (public transportation in the works), and they have the share the Koreans' same insane work ethic.
The Korean worth ethic is way overrated. 항상 식사중

Just anecdotal things, but Ive recently seen:
-several friends not get their jonsae money back. Owners simply disappeared
-friend got scammed by a yonsei grad who was bankrupt
-MOST 20s Koreans I know are unemployed, doing a worthless grad program, or working part time.

Couple that with miserable contracts for ESL, cuts in public school, parents taking their kids out of hagwons....it really feels like 2009 America. I might be exaggerating but, the economy here looks baaaaad. Maybe a big recession coming in Korea. Could be bigger than most people realize.

So what does the plight of a few not so noteworthy NETs have to do with the overall Korean economy?

The overall Korean economy is humming along, albeit not booming, but certainly not in the doldrums. But then again, everything you stated in your little excerpt has nothing to do with the Korean economy.

If you're so concerned about the Korean economy and its impact on your prospects of finding an ESL job, stay in America where new indicators state that the economy is growing stealthily.

Your biggest achievement is trolling a message board during a fake "semi-retirement" and nothing more. No one is buying what you are selling.

Update us on the iPhone 6. I went from a 3 to a 4. Now I'm thinking about the 6. I like the iPhones. They take a roughing and keep on ticking. My wife and I had problems with other brands breaking and cracking along with electronic problems, but since switching over to iPhones we've never had a problem.

Yeah, please update all of us. I'm on pins and needles just like this guy is to find out. I could read online reviews, but why do that when you Dave's guys are so much more respectable.

It's another clear win for Apple, expect to see a lot of Koreans with the big one, and perhaps more Samsung stock decline.

We've got the normal size 6, and the "plus". Both are good, the normal seems the perfect size, the plus is just plain massive. Normal size holds an extra row of icons since it is taller than the 5. Screen looks great, camera is better, video looks great. Battery seems normal.

The fingerprint unlock is the coolest new feature. Before you had to do six touches to unlock (wake, swipe, 4-digit code), now one touch opens the whole deal, and with more security. I once had a crazy girlfriend who spied my passcode and broke into my iPhone, that won't work now...need to cut my finger off.

ApplePay -- doesn't seem to take Korean banks, but it did accept my US bank debit card. Haven't actually tried buying anything yet.

Everything else seems business as usual, coming from the 5S.

Solid trade numbers...

----------------------------------
S. Korea Trade Surplus Hits Unexpected Record

South Korea posted a record trade surplus in October as demand from the U.S. boosted exports of products such as steel pipes and computers.

The $7.5 billion surplus was the highest for any month, the trade ministry said in an e-mailed statement today, and was was $2.5 billion more than the median estimate in a survey of economists by Bloomberg News. Exports rose 2.5 percent from a year earlier, while imports dropped 3 percent.

The unexpectedly strong trade performance could further boost economic growth, which accelerated in the second quarter on stronger consumption, and fiscal and monetary stimulus. “U.S. demand for Korean goods is solid, especially before the holiday season. We may continue to see growth in exports until the end of this year,” Yoon Yeo Sam, economist at KDB Daewoo Securities.

But considering your negative outlook on the U.S. and that these numbers are good due to demand from the U.S., how long can it last?

BTW, what are those lazy Americans doing with all that steel pipe?
