It's official. Cigarette prices are going to 4500 won, next year.

In the name of good health and and less stinky in the air, a shout out for the nonsmokers out there.

Hora Hooray!

Yeah, I have no problem with a jump up to 4500. I think that that is roughly the max price you can get to before you start seeing serious problems like dependency on cigarette tax revenue leading to budget mismanagement and things like cigarette smuggling taking hold.

I do think they should leave a single legacy dirt cheap, utterly awful 2500 won a pack brand for poor people to smoke. Maybe restrict sales to those 50 and older or something.

And ecigs are going to go through the roof.

I think a lot of people will be stocking up on cartons of smokes before then. Tbh, I don't think an extra 2,000 won will make a huge difference other than create tax revenue. Maybe they will begin to raise the prices in annual increments like the UK.

The point is to determine what % of responders are undecided about giving up smoking. What % are okay with stinking. What % don't have the bad habit.

Pay an extra 2000 won for my favorite legal addiction? No problem at all.

Not to lament or anything, but Marlboros were only 1200 won a pack when I first arrived in Korea in '95. Crying or Very sad Korean brands were 800 won. Either that or my memory is starting to go.

I decided I just needed to go ahead and quit after finding out they are increasing the prices. That, and because there are less and less places that allow you to smoke indoors. Hey, it's tons healtier right? I went ahead and go into the ecig thing and it's been three weeks without a real smoke. 2 for 120k. If anyone is interested PM me for info, I gotta guy.

Actually this..

When did this happen?

Seems like overnight I woke up and suddenly have seen more people smoking E-cigs than not outside. Also, all the stores / marts near my place have started selling the liquid (?) for E-cigs right in front of the counter.

Well, they are raising cig taxes to pay for medical expenses short fall. The explanation of the minister was a graphic of few instances where raising cig prices lowered the number of smokers. However, this is Korea. Koreans will import/smuggle cheap Chinese cigs/toxic-industrial-waste and continue to smoke. Gov revenue from cig taxes will plummet. The minister will resign and retire with his massively indexed pension. Every time we light up, it's another 100 won in the pockets of politicians. Laughing

That sounds cheap. I thought it was $10/pack in NYC. That's around the price for cigs here in DC now. Of course you can just go over to Virigina and get cigs for half that price.
